House insight: Raleigh – Holly C

In a new regular feature, Holly takes us ‘around the houses’ to see how life differs across the RHS site…

Home to Sir Walter Raleigh, House Shout winners 2026 and the Brightwell’s dog, April. `Raleigh founded in around the late 1930s, it has always been a strong competitor for all school events. However, have you ever wondered what it would be like to spend a day in Raleigh?

After signing in and dropping your bags, Raleigh pupils enjoy playing pool (not always in the most traditional way), ping pong, basketball, chatting or for the years 10,11 and 12 now revision.

Break is always the best time in Raleigh, with a range of snacks like biscuits, Biscoff sandwiches or rice cakes. With a friendly yet competitive game of ping pong with Mr Olusegun and packing up for the next period.

Best off all, as many in Raleigh would agree, is afterschool when the house tuck shop is open. With favourites being ice-creams and custard creams.

But to truly get to the heart of Raleigh house, I have decided to interview the one and only house master, Mr Brightwell.

  • What is your favourite part of being in Raleigh?

“Seeing all the pupils walking in, whilst sitting on the sofa, in the morning in Raleigh’s foyer or when all the children have gone home at 5:30.”

  • What’s your favourites item from the breaktime selection?

“As I am gluten free, the rice cakes are the best. Specifically, the spicy rice cakes.”

  • If you had to change one thing in Raleigh, what would it be?

“Definitely the carpets in the main room.”

  • If you had to move to be housemaster in another house, where would you go?

“Hawke as there is no children there and DEFINETLY NOT DRAKE.”
