Turning the Page – Mr and Mrs Millington

Turning the Page – Mr and Mrs Millington

As their RHS chapter comes to a close, Mr and Mrs Millington turn the page, with a new adventure waiting for them.

With another school year coming to a close we pause to recognise staff who will sadly not be returning but instead moving onto new chapters in their adventures. This Bubble feature will provide some insight into staff departing whilst celebrating their hard work, commitment and dedication which will forever leave a lasting impact on our RHS community. This second edition features a farewell for Mr and Mrs Millington. Mr Millington joined the school in 2015 as Head of Design & Technology, while Mrs Millington was later appointed as an EAL teacher.

Read on to find out more about Mr and Mrs Millingtonโ€™s RHS journey.

Mr and Mrs Millingtonโ€™s favourite RHS memories:

Mr Millington has had many great memories from his time at RHS, but one in particular which came to mind was his trip to Ecuador with Mrs Oโ€™Callaghan and 27 pupils from RHS. โ€œIt was an amazing trip, seeing all the different regions of Ecuador, from the Andes Mountains to the Amazon jungle.โ€ Another vivid memory for Mr Millington is RHS in the year after COVID, when year groups were in bubbles. He was in Cornwallis with Mr Cohen and all the Year 12 boys. โ€œIt was a great year group, and there were lots of evenings where the house cooked meals from the boysโ€™ different countries and cultures.โ€œ

Mrs Millington has many great memories too, one of her favourites – Organising the Jubilee Tea Party! With the whole school community coming together to celebrate, with pupils, teaching staff and support staff all sitting together for a Jubilee tea party on the dias. โ€œLong trestle tables and benches were set out, creating a wonderful sense of community as everyone shared the occasion together. One of the most memorable moments came at the end of the event when the pupils took real ownership of the clear-up. Around 100 people worked together to carry tables and benches across the parade square and load them onto a lorry. It was a fantastic example of teamwork, community spirit and the willingness of everyone to pitch in and help.โ€

โ€œI love this photo of the Gould’s, Mr Cohen and us when we snuck up to the balcony to watch sunset ceremony and felt very naughty!โ€
โ€œI also love the photo of the colour run that happened as part of the school fete in 2017 (I think)โ€œ

An insight into Mr and Mrs Millingtonโ€™s next adventure:

โ€œWe have a busy and emotional summer ahead as we say goodbye to good friends and pack up No. 28 after so many happy years.โ€ On 16th August, the Millingtonโ€™s will fly to Bahrain to begin their next adventure, working at St Christopherโ€™s School. Their plan is to spend the first term settling into life on the island, getting to know the community and exploring everything Bahrain has to offer. With wanting to live abroad for a long time and holding a pure love to travel as a family, they hope this will give them an opportunity to do more of this. Hoping to explore local countries such as Saudi Arabia and Oman, as well as places further afield like Sri Lanka and India over the next few years, it seems their journeyโ€™s final destination is not set.

What do you both hope or think you will be most remembered for?

โ€œI feel the number of pupils who have gone through the school and gone on to study product design or engineering has increased over my time at RHS. I hope I have had a positive impact on those pupils and the growing numbers.โ€

โ€œI hope we will be remembered for being approachable, supportive and fully involved members of the community. Throughout our time here, we have tried to contribute positively to school life, build strong relationships with pupils, parents and colleagues, and embrace the many opportunities that come with being part of such a unique community.โ€

Mr and Mrs Millingtonโ€™s time at RHS has clearly been an adventure, one to never forget. As they move on, they simply turn the page into a new chapter in their journey, whilst their time at RHS comes to a close, the memories they both will leave behind will remain a part of many pupilsโ€™ stories, alongside our RHS story. We all wish them every success as they discover what lies ahead, continuing to turn countless pages.

What began as a professional opportunity quickly became much more, and over the years the school and wider community have played a significant role in our family’s life. Looking back, it is hard to believe how quickly the years have passed and how many friendships and memories have been made along the way. If people remember us as individuals who were always willing to help, get involved and support others, then we would be very proud of that legacy. – Mr Millington, Head of Design & Technology. – Mrs Millington, Teacher of EAL.
