‘So long’ – Mr Watson-Davis
It is neither Wednesday morning at 5 o’clock, nor are we aboard a midnight train to Georgia, but RHS’ very own musical legend, Mr Watson-Davis, is indeed ‘leaving’. Here’s what he has to say to you in his final address.
Well, word has got around that the school will be minus one teacher next term. Apparently, according to some pupils who heard the news, I am ‘not allowed’ to leave RHS. I now have visions of being marched to the school cellars at gunpoint and locked in, only being let out to teach lessons next term. So I may well employ bodyguards to escort me safely from the premises on December 11th. Well, sorry folks but I really need to go -I have been in paid employment since 1985, so after 35 years of work, including 29 years teaching, I think I am due a break! Also – and whisper this quietly – I really don’t feel I can keep on teaching as well as I strive to, and that isn’t really fair on anybody. Age gets everyone in the end, and if I cannot teach on all cylinders then I would rather not teach at all.
So what next? Well, nothing for a while – definitely a recharge of batteries, possibly further study at University, highly likely watching episodes of classic Dr Who and listening to 70s and 80s Rock Music. Oh, and loads of time with my cats, and following instructions from the Tyrant Queen (my partner Dawn) who already has compiled a list of things to do and meals she wants cooked (actually, being locked in a RHS cellar at gunpoint is beginning to sound appealing).
To the RHS community, a big thanks for being so friendly. For every pupil here, I hope that you find these things: the self-belief to realise that you are all very good at something; the resilience to ride life’s peaks and troughs; and a long and cheerfully lived life.
So long.
