Euros 2024: Group A Predictions- Phoebe G

Procrastination and one *intense* hour of Drake family-time football under my belt has left me feeling very inspired this week. A rare occurrence, I know. The impeccably high standards of football displayed by Family D (and various other family rejects who wanted to snake their way into the team) closely resembled what could only be described as Barcelona in their 2008-2009 season, unbeatable. Naturally, I was reminded of the iconic Euro’s competition, where countries across Europe fight, admittedly, in a similar way as the families of Drake house, to be crowned the continental (or house) champion. Whilst the first match of the Euros doesn’t kick off until the 14th of June, I thought that I would get ahead and post my predictions for the outcomes of each group. This week starts with Week A…

Group A:

Germany vs Scotland:

As the host nation, Germany have qualified automatically and will play the first match of the tournament against Scotland. Their position in the Euros was pretty much guaranteed anyway; they have featured in every one since 1972! Whilst Scotland is an impressive side, with a number of recognisable talents from the Premier League: Scott McTominay, Robbo and McGinn, and Germany have struggled to find their form in recent years, I don’t feel as though this match will be too difficult for Germany, it should be a convincing win (especially since its on home soil) but you never know!

Prediction: 3-0 to Germany

Hungary vs Switzerland:

Hungary’s track record against Switzerland is pretty impressive: 35 Wins, 5 Draws and 11 Losses. So I’m expecting another win, but perhaps a game that is a bit more evenly matched than Germany vs Scotland.

Prediction: 2-1 to Hungary

Germany vs Hungary:

The hosts’ second game of the competition is likely to be an interesting match-up. In their most recent game, 23/09/22, Hungary narrowly came away with the win in the Nations League, putting on a convincing performance against a formidable German side. I feel as though this match will once again prove to be a nail-biter, with either a draw or a narrow win on the cards for either team.

Scotland vs Switzerland:

Scotland vs Switzerland is more of an uncommon sight in the world of football. Whilst they have won more games than they’ve lost against the Swiss, the odds are stacked against them in the Euros; they have not won a game in the competition since Euro ’96. This may be the year that they make history…

Prediction: 1-0 to Scotland (!!!)

Switzerland vs Germany:

The match against Switzerland has often proved to be a convincing win for the Germans. However, Germany’s failure to go past the round of 16 in the last Euros competition and Switzerland’s quarter final achievement has caused many a football fan to question whether Switzerland can silence the German side this year. That being said, I still feel that Germany, having the Home advantage will pull away with this match, to the dismay of the Swiss.

Prediction: 2-0 to Germany

Scotland vs Hungary:

This may be one of the closest games of the Group, and one I am very excited for! Scotland have historically lost more matches against Hungary than they’ve won and Hungary’s qualifying stats are more promising. The Hungarians have averaged scoring 2 goals a game and conceding 0.88. However, the Scottish average scoring about 2 goals a game and conceding 1. I think the recent form of Hungary will give them the cutting edge in this game, but the victory will be narrow nevertheless.

Prediction: 2-1 (to Hungary)
