Oscar Nominations: a quick preview – Emi S

It’s that time of year again… the time where we all totally objectively decide who wins prestigious awards in filmmaking! This year, the Oscars will take place on Sunday 10th March – the nominations were released yesterday, so let’s take a look at talked-about favourites and biggest snubs:

Favourites to win the big awards include Poor Things, Oppenheimer, and Killers of the Flower Moon, all of which I feel are largely deserved. Maestro, though nominated for a significant number of awards including the big three (Best Picture, Best Actor, and Best Actress), hasn’t received the most positive general consensus, and so any wins it gains over other films could be controversial. Aside from the big-budget Hollywood films, Anatomy of a Fall and The Zone of Interest have received some nominations too.

Barbie, already being under-nominated as well as criticised by “stand-up comedian” Jo Kay at the Golden Globes, received some nominations, but in some categories was severely lacking. For example, although it was nominated for Best Picture, Supporting Actor & Actress, and Costume, many thought that nominations missed out on Greta Gerwig as Best Director and Margot Robbie as Best Actress. Ryan Gosling, nominated for Best Actor, even commented on the strange way in which the two main women involved in the film’s creation were not nominated at all. This follows from Gerwig’s Oscar snub in 2020 for Little Women, which Natalie Portman emphasised on 2020’s red carpet.
