Top 10 RHS Christmas hymns – Zara S

Top 10 RHS Christmas hymns – Zara S

That time of year has come round again, house Christmas parties, secret Santa, civies day, but arguably the most important: chapel. Chapel may be a burden to some, however as you move through the school, you will come to acknowledge and appreciate chapel on a Thursday, still not so keen on the occasional Friday afternoon though. One of the things that I believe makes this time of year so special at school are the festive hymns and the Holbrook sound, otherwise only heard for the likes of Jerusalem and I vow to thee my country. Therefore I, with the opinions of a few others, give you the top 10 Christmas hymns that grace our ears in the last few weeks of term, Mr Allen take notes.

10. Joy to the world

– classic, not featured enough in chapel

9. Nowell nowell

– House favourite, but a bit repetitive for my liking, and only the chorus is good, do better

8. O little town of Bethlehem

– arguably unappreciated but after its recent debut in last week’s chapel I believe it deserves its place on the list

7. We three kings

– classic, definitely not sung enough but could it make an appearance this Friday?

6. Good king Wenceslas

– Not much to say about his one personally, but solid hymn, couple suggestions, not good enough for top 5

5. Ding dong merrily on high

– suggested by George reeve, rather upbeat in comparison to the recent attitudes surrounding the year 12 mock exams.

4. Once in Royal David’s city

– is it even a carol service if you don’t get whiplash turning around for the soloist at the beginning

3. Hark the herald angels sing

– number 3, argue with a wall

2. God rest ye merry gentlemen

– personally I, as well as many others, believe that this should be number one, however after serious debate in a-level maths, as well as the fact that Mr Cuddihy is currently marking my mock paper it has been knocked down to number two , many apologies for this injustice.

1. O come all ye faithful

– banger

Honourable mentions

Jerusalem – can be sung all year round

In the bleak mid winter – suggested by Michele in the café

Sparkle and shine – nativity

God save the king – patriotism

Silent night – too quiet to be on the list

For reference there is a difference between carols and hymns, don’t be salty that jingle bells isn’t on the list.
