Support Staff Profiles: Bonnie – Sapphire B-G
Bonnie is a member of the estates team who does a lot to help us around school. Surely you guys have seen him? He’s hard to miss! His cheerful and cheeky demeanour never fails. Bonnie has picked me up from horse-riding every Tuesday for the past 5 years, and let me tell you, once I leave RHS I am going to miss our chats.
I asked Bonnie how many years he has been at RHS and what he likes about dropping us off at Horse riding and picking us up, he responded with “I have been at RHS for 28 years straight and have seen 5 headmasters look after the school… I like to learn further things about the school, and what the pupils get up to”. After our 5-minute bus journey back to school, I reflected further on what he had said. 28 years!? I have been at RHS for seven and that alone feels like a journey.
28 years not only shows commitment from Bonnie, but it also shows the memories he has made and the number of friendships he has made with pupils and teachers that have moved on from this school. It is a lot to take away, and even after these 28 years Bonnie seems never to tire of the world of RHS. He enjoys looking after the school and hearing about the pupil’s daily lives, as well as what they’re looking forward to (mainly Christmas, at the minute).
Bonnie has a vivid personality, and my favourite eccentricity is that every time he drives past his house to drop us off at school, he honks his horn at his wife so she knows to put the kettle on! I can almost predict to the exact second when he will honk. For ages I had wondered why he does it and had thought it was just to say hi, until one day I asked him “why do you always honk when driving past that house?” and that’s when he said he “honks to remind his wife to put the kettle on, ready”.
So next time you see Bonnie around school, make sure to say hi. Trust me, you won’t be disappointed – he is very very funny. My prediction for Bonnie is that he has probably made over 20,000 friends in the years he has been at RHS. I know, I know, you probably think that is unlikely, but I really don’t: trust me, say hi to him and you will see what I mean.
