Life Before RHS – Jess E
After a long break, Life Before RHS is back, for its final feature of the term. Whilst this article may not be Christmassy, keep an eye on my page to see a Christmas edition soon!! A member of staff who’s possibly a friend of a past Prime Minister and tried to bring the beach in Vietnam back with him.

Mr Clare – Second in Mathematics and Head of Cross Country
Favourite Memory Before RHS?
has to be running the Sports Relief Mile in London when I was in Year 7 with my stepdad. The highlight? A 30-second chat with Boris Johnson, who at the time was soon to become Mayor of London. Fun extra fact: the very first iPhone came out that same year, so whilst I was running, the world was learning to swipe!
What Was Your School Career Like?
I grew up in North London and studied A Levels in Mathematics, Further Mathematics and Economics at Enfield Grammar. Those results took me to the University of Nottingham, where I spent three years doing what every maths student dreams of, more maths.
Did You Always Want to Work in Education?
I’ve worked in education since the age of 21. How I wish I could be that age again! My first teaching role was in Derby, affectionately known as “Derbados”, where I spent three years trying to balance life in the classroom whilst pretending I was still at university. Spoiler: Derby nightlife is not quite Nottingham nightlife.
Something Not Many People Know About Me…
Despite having a mathematical brain, I have three younger sisters who all hated maths at school. Two of the three did eventually pass…..
Fun Fact!
(I’m cheating here by saying something which happened this year) Whilst travelling in Vietnam this summer, I was kicked off a sleeper bus for bringing too much sand on board. Apparently, buses aren’t fans of beach souvenirs. Luckily, they let me back on, minus the sand.

Mr Clare as a young child.
It seems his love for sand has been around since his childhood, I wonder if he tried to smuggle some sand into the house like he recently did on the bus.
That’s it for this term on ‘Life Before RHS’!!! If you want to know more secret insights into the life of your teachers before they became a part of RHS, come back after the holidays for an insight into another member of staff!
Happy Christmas and Happy New Year!
