Underrated Christmas Bangers – Honor B

Underrated Christmas Bangers – Honor B

Despite my belief that it should be socially acceptable to play Wham’s Last Christmas year round, on some rare occasions I find my self searching for alternative Christmas tunes. When in History yesterday I announced my favourite Christmas song as ‘Christmas Wrapping’ by the Waitresses, I was met with looks of dismay, horror, and quite frankly disgust. Nevertheless, I will share my opinions (although evidently divisive)  on some songs that I consider the peak of Christmas music, and if your playlist is looking lacklustre then this article is for you!

1 . Christmas Wrapping-The Waitresses

I was under the impression that this was a universally loved classic, but the song’s 37,000,000 streams on Spotify seem to suggest otherwise. Maybe it’s the nostalgia deluding me here, but I believe this song is severely underrated.

2. Christmas (Baby Please Come Home) – Darlene Love

Okay, this is far more widely regarded as a classic than my no. 1 Christmas anthem, but I think it’s deserving of Last Christmas status. No song screams Christmas rom-com like this one, and I do believe that is perfectly acceptable criteria for a good Christmas song.

3. Christmas time – The Darkness

Although not a conventional Christmas song, the lack of this song being played in shops at Christmas also shocks me greatly. This song only has 2 million more streams than Christmas Wrapping, again my impressions surrounding its popularity seem to be distorted!

4. Winter Wonderland – Laufey

If you’re looking for a modern cover of a classic, this one happens to be my favourite. It certainly deserves more traction, so again if your playlist is in dire need of new Christmas editions, this is a great place to start.

5. A Spaceman Came Travelling – Chris de Burgh

Although the chorus is quite well know, I feel like this song does not get enough recognition with it’s gorgeous chorus and emotive lyrics. Chris de Burgh really outdid himself with this one!

6. Merry Christmas, Please Don’t Call – The Bleachers

With its release in 2024, this song is a new found classic. Only boasting 10 million streams, this is a great way to claim your originality, and tell people that you got there first when, inevitably it becomes a well renowned Christmas song.
