A ‘Super Sunday’ to remember- Phoebe G

There was a mixture of both happiness and heartbreak for sports fans over the weekend, with dominant displays from Wales in rugby, and Newcastle United in football, shattering the hearts of the Australian and Sheffield United fans. So, obviously, instead of doing my prep (sorry Mr Hodson!) I found myself gripped by the relentless sporting action.

My father and I, both avid couch critics, watched the Wales vs Australia Rugby World Cup match. The group stage match began with a brilliant try from a fantastic Welsh line-out, where Davies, the Welsh scrum-half, showed excellent speed as he evaded the poor Australian defence. After an easy conversion, Wales led 7 points to nil. Since then, Australia struggled to gain a foothold on the match and Wales were dominant from start to finish, ending the game with a 40-6 victory. This scoreline marked Wales’s biggest ever win over the Wallabies, with the two-time World Cup champions suffering their heaviest world cup defeat.

On the same day, Newcastle thrashed Sheffield United in football for an 8-0 victory away from home, moving up to 8thin the standings. I will be completely honest, I didn’t actually watch this game, I only found out about it after a friend mentioned it to me. But having watched the highlights, what I found most impressive was not the score line (although very striking) but the fact that each goal was scored by a different player! This made Newcastle the first team in Premier League history to do so.

Whilst obviously extremely humiliating for Sheffield United, other teams also have some serious work to do. It seems that in 90 minutes, Newcastle have scored more goals than teams such as Chelsea, Nottingham Forest, Manchester United, Crystal Palace and Fulham have in their entire season!

All in all, Sunday was extremely action-packed, and I hope that there will be more like it in the future!
