Hispanic Day by Ines P.
The National Day of Spain, also known as Hispanic Day, is a national holiday which is celebrated annually on October 12 since 1892. This national day is a day of celebration when Spanish people celebrate our Spanish history. The Hispanic Day commemorates the historic event of the discovery of the Americas by Christopher Columbus in 1492. Thanks to him, Europe and America began to have contact.
All of Spain celebrates this day but the most important act is celebrated in Madrid where there is a military parade and a tribute to the national flag, attended by the king, the royal family and the most important representatives from Spain.
Each family celebrates this day in their own way. My family usually watches the parade on TV. We have gone to Madrid in the past to see the parade live. Usually the parade lasts around 40 minutes so after that, we have an aperitif and then we have lunch with our family and/or friends. In Madrid people normally get a day off to watch the parade but there are other parts of Spain, especially those which would like to be independent, where the National Day is not celebrated so widely. In most cities the streets and bars are decorated with Spanish flags and pennants. Also, people decorate their cars, wear shirts of the Spanish football team, and on some terraces and balconies you can see the Spanish flag. Furthermore, some museums and palaces are free of charge which makes for a great day out with the family.
