Councillor Suspended- Arianna O

If you didn’t know Reform UK won the local election. A newly elected reform councillor has been suspended from the party due to allegations of racism.
Glenn Gibbins was elected to represent the Hylton Castle Ward on Sunderland city council on Thursday. He was accused of posting racist comments online. Which he posted “Nigerians should be melted down to fill potholes,”.

On Sunday, the deputy leader of Durham County, Darren Grimes said Gibbins has been suspended. To contradict that, Reform UK later said that wasn’t correct and Gibbins was under investigation.
Gibbins has now deleted the post but it’s believed to be from March 2024. Also added on too his allegations he was also been accused of misogyny in the past.

Laura Kuenssberg interviews Reform UK deputy leader, Richard Tice. Even though, he refused to directly address the matter, but he said, “he condemned anything that is wrong and inappropriate,”.
So, in the end, this is a bad look for Reform UK right after they did well in the elections. It shows they might have a big problem with who they let become councillors. The whole thing is messy because even people in the party couldn’t agree on if he was suspended or just being investigated. It makes them seem disorganised. Even their deputy leader on TV didn’t really want to talk about it properly. Basically, this racist scandal is probably not the kind of attention they wanted, and it could really damage their reputation.
