Swift wins and Del Rey loses at Grammy’s – Isabel T
The Grammy’s kicked off on the 5th February, bringing Taylor Swift her 14th Grammy. With 94 categories for awards, I’ll summarise the top awards that social media is raving about as well as the ones social media is raging about!
Tay Tay’s 2 wins from 6 nominations are from the 2 biggest categories: Best Pop Vocal Album and Album of the Year. Other nominees for these categories are such as Olivia Rodrigo, Miley Cyrus, Lana Del Rey, John Batiste, etc. As Celine Dion hands Taylor her Grammy, she takes a moment in her speech to announce another album that is currently in production: The Tortured Poets Department. This woman is one of the most active women in her career, I genuinely have lost count of the number of songs and albums she’s released within the past few years. During this, she has gathered a strong and loyal fanbase of pre-teen and teenage girls avidly defending their idol as she jets across the country to see her NFL boyfriend (who is most definitely going to be mentioned in the new album). But even I have to admit, she has certainly become successful with a net worth of over $1 billion!
Another artist who has dominated the Grammy’s this year is Miley Cyrus. Her hit song ‘Flowers’ has been played in every single retail store to exist in the Western society. Poor Liam Hemsworth. During her performance of her song, she told off the crowd for not singing along while also recognising that her song has most definitely been overplayed last year. “Why are you acting like you don’t know this song?” Maybe we can put it to rest this year. Cyrus was nominated for 5 Grammy’s, winning 2: Record of the Year and Best Solo Pop Performance, she was handed one of her awards by Mariah Carey. This probably won’t be the end of her musical career – maybe more diss tracks about Liam? Who knows?
Now one of the most frustrating moments in the Grammy’s is the extremely talented Ms Lana Del Rey, who was nominated for 5 awards yet received none, overpowered by Swift’s recent domination of the music sector. Lana released her new album: Did You Know That There’s A Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd? If you are unaware of this artist or this album, I plead you give her a listen: she is most famous for tracks such as Summertime Sadness and Young and Beautiful, but her most recent album released songs that gave her nominations: Candy Necklace and A&W (Honourable mentions of the album: Let the Light In and Margaret). It was not difficult to see her disappointment throughout the show, even turning her face away from the camera when zoomed in for shots. She was even brought up on stage by Swift, awkwardly standing beside her as she accepts more Grammy’s to her collection while Lana struggles to get her first. Later that night, she posted a series of photos of her time at the event, including a picture of her holding a hand gun at the end of the post – probably as a sign of protest and exasperation of yet to win a Grammy.
Here are some words of an avid Lana Del Rey fan: ‘I’m absolutely raging’ , ‘Taylor Swift is terrible and doesn’t deserve an award for yapping. I don’t care she has another album out – should be quality not quantity’ – Lucia DB. Most of the internet these days have similar opinions to Lucia’s, wondering what animal is required to sacrifice in order to get her first Grammy.
