10 facts about Ukraine – Viktor S.

There is more to Ukraine than the current tensions with Russia. Here are 10 short facts that everyone should know about Ukraine.

1. Ukraine is the biggest country in Europe.

2. Kiev, the capital of Ukraine, has the deepest metro station in the world (105.5 metres deep).

3. Ukraine is not similar to Russia; Ukraine is older than Russia. However, everyone thinks Ukraine is similar to Russia because a lot of people in Ukraine speak Russian. Many years ago Russia, Ukraine and a lot of other countries were like one country and the president of USSR lived in Russia.

4. Chicken Kiev is not from Kiev; it originated in Russia.

5. Chernobyl was the biggest nuclear disaster in history. The radiation spread to a few countries and of course within Ukraine. (Mrs Hodson-Langer told me that the sandpits on German playgrounds were emptied and filled with new sand after the accident as people were worried about the radioactive sand.) Nearly 3000 people died straight after the accident and a lot of people died within a few years because they had a lot of radiation in their body.

6. Europe’s oldest coffee house is in Ukraine.

7. Kiev McDonalds in the most visited in the world.

8. The biggest airplane in the world is made in Ukraine.

9. In Ukraine there are few ghost towns, e.g., Chernobyl and Pripyat.
