Video Games vs The Real Deal; Which is better? – Ethan F

Kids are constantly arguing to their parents because they are telling them to go outside and do an activity. I have decided to compare the two. Which is better? Virtual or physical?

Recently, there has been a massive rise in internet users throughout the country due to the current pandemic. Unfortunately, there has been a lack of physical activities, and lots of children under 16 have found themselves with nothing to do apart from video games. This has resulted in an enormous change in mental health because of the unending cycle of boredom.

The first game I will compare is called ‘Fortnite’. I am sure you’ve all heard of this game and know what it is about. For those who do not know, this is an online third person shooter game where you must collect guns and shoot all the opponents until you are the last player standing.

This game is quite addictive and has hundreds of millions of players worldwide. It is entertaining and fun for some and many YouTubers have made thousands of pounds from it, it even has a 4 out of 5 star rating. The physical alternative to this I have found is paintball/laser tag. This physical work can cause your body to release natural endorphins, which are drugs that make you feel happy or feel good. Another pro to paintball/laser tag is that it is a form of exercise, and keeps you fit, meaning a longer life expectancy and less health problems. One of the issues with video games (excluding some forms of VR and active sports games on consoles) is that you don’t do any active activity during gameplay. Although physical activity is beneficial for you, it is also limited in what you can do. In Fortnite, you can do emotes and dances that you are not capable of in real life, you can fly, you can be any character of your choice and build anything that comes to mind.

The next game that is played a lot is Minecraft. This is a game where you have two main modes: creative mode and survival mode.  In creative mode you can build lots of buildings, there is no limit on size so they can be as big or as small as you like. You can fly around placing blocks and mobs to create the image in your head.

Alternatively, you can build things in real life, and do D.I.Y. model buildings. On a larger scale, you can start to take up architecture and design grand buildings. One day you can even have it built. In survival mode, you try to survive in the wilderness by creating tools and bases to protect yourself at night and create progress in the day. The best alternative is to join scouts or some form of survival club. You can learn more things and have a wider range of skills.

The third and final game on my list is Roblox. This is not necessarily a game itself, but an app where you can play games within. Lots of people upload games on this app for other users to play, and has resulted in this game achieving over one billion downloads.

In the world of Roblox, there are so many things to do. You can either play games or make them. Usually, there’s a game for everyone on Roblox, whether it’s racing, cops and robbers or a building game. Some just like to customize their characters and show them off. There just are not enough alternatives to compare to this enormous game. The only issue is that because this is such a flexible game, many people spend hours on it.

I have gathered from this that as long as it is limited well, video games are a brilliant way to have fun, as long as you come off and find other ways of enjoyment.
