Outerbanks Season 4- A Disaster?- Nellie N
WARNING!! MAJOR SPOILERS!! Also a quick note, Outerbanks has a UK age rating of 15 so please bear this in mind before you consider watching. Anyways, with the release of a brand new season I thought that it was fitting to break down and discuss what I believe to be by far the worst crime Netflix has committed within a series…(that includes the entirety of Riverdale)
Outerbanks is a teen drama that follows a group of teenagers called the ‘Pogues’ who live in the Outerbanks of North Carolina. These characters are called Pope, JJ, Kie, Sarah and the main character/narrator, John B (they are later joined by Cleo in season 2). The series 1-3 followed the storyline based on the search for a legendary treasure linked to the disappearance of John B’s father. They are up against a rival group of wealthy teens called the ‘Kooks’, including characters such as Sarah’s brother Rafe and her ex, Topper. Season 3 ends with a mysterious man gifting the Pogues a captain’s log that once belonged to Blackbeard, leading into further mystery and adventure.
Due to the meticulous wide range of storylines, it is nearly impossible for me to recap and summarise EVERYTHING from season 4 alone. However, these are the key moments from the new season that either had me on the edge of my seat or questioning if the writers sat down and planned on losing as many viewers as they wanted…
Let’s start with the side characters, this includes Topper, Topper’s girlfriend Ruthie and Rafe’s (now ex) girlfriend/(ex)fiancé Sofia. We are gradually seeing Topper having a change of heart, however, the same can’t be said for Ruthie who was way too cheerful for the fact that turtles and Pogues were almost killed. As for Sofia, getting recruited to persuade your boyfriend to invest in a scam? Who knows what she got herself in to but it’s safe to say her and Rafe are no longer together!
Speaking of Rafe, this season we saw a drastic positive change in his behaviour however, he still can’t be trusted. Especially after the news of Sarah’s pregnancy??!! After helping the Pogues escape to Morrocco (then getting held hostage by them) and discovering the news that he will be an uncle in the most random plot line I’ve ever seen, he displayed a true change of nature (kind of- it is still Rafe after all). As for Sarah: getting lost in the middle of the ocean with JJ as a rescue, stranded in Morocco for a night, being dehydrated, starving and being pregnant through all of this. I hope she will be okay.
Now, moving onto what I’m sure you’re all here for, the death of JJ. After finding the blue crown in a vicious sandstorm finally, as the Pogues had been taken to numerous places in search to find this item and even lost their home/shop (Poguelandia), JJ is murdered by his father Groff. The blue crown is said to ‘grant wishes’, it is part of Blackbeard’s treasure and had been searched for by Groff who is currently the main villain in the series, whom which we recently found out was JJ’s real dad after years of deception.
This paved the way for an emotional yet fierce finale. With Cleo and Pope, Sarah and John B, Kie is now left without her JJ and the Pogues are left without their best friend. With much speculation as to why this had to happen behind the scenes, involving numerous rumours about the actors who play Kie and JJ and their own personal lives, it’s hard to comprehend why the writers would make such a devastating decision that most likely will cost them a vast majority of their viewers but it paves the way for Season 5 which will be centred around the Pogue’s revenge on Groff as implied by Rafe at the end of episode 10. As for whether or not the new season was a true disaster(it was definitely full of shocks), I’ll leave you to watch the series- but perhaps skip the final episode for your sanity.
