Top 5 Christmas Films – Isabel T
Who doesn’t love a classic Christmas movie about a white Christmas (more like rainy) and outfits exclusively in red and green? If you happen to find a spare few hours in your busy revision schedule over Christmas, here are my personal (and Mr Hodson’s) top 5 festive films.
5) The Muppet Christmas Carol
This is unironically the best adaptation of Dickins’ Christmas Carol. Despite the slightly scary looking ghosts pictured above, it includes, in my opinion, the perfect mix of comedy while maintaining Dickins’ infamous plot. Honestly a childhood favourite that is just a classic. Also definitely counts as revision and adaptation for those studying it for GCSE.
4) Home Alone 2: Lost in New York
I have heard much debate about Home Alone 1 and 2, and which crowns the other, but for me, Kevin’s journey to New York tops it. With cameos from such people like Donald Trump, it has its prequal’s success to add to, creating one of the funniest and feel-good Christmas films. An accurate depiction of a child with a uncontrolled credit card, which was all of our dreams. With the return and revenge of the ‘Wet Bandits’, they are even more determined to catch a 10 year old, which of course, they fail horrendously. Again.
3) Planes, Trains and Automobiles
While proposing this article idea to the Bubble group, Mr Hodson required me to include this film in the top 5. While having not actually watching it, I take Letterboxd reviews, and of course Mr Hodson’s, into account to give this no3 spot. The plot follows Neal and Del on their treacherous journey to their Thanksgiving dinner after their flight was cancelled. They proceed to make their way there by plane, train, hire car and, obviously, a milk truck. Will be putting this at the top of my watchlist!
2) The Holiday
A typical British and American crossover with Kate Winslet and Cameron Diaz who desperately need to escape their work and failed love life, so opt for a complete change of scenery when agreeing to swap their houses for Christmas, and, of course, find the loves of their lives. I absolutely live for the alternating viewpoints of both LA and a quaint village somewhere in England. This film is fun, flirty and not to mention includes the most beautiful houses.
1) Love Actually
A classic choice that is pretty much a crime if you have not set your eyes upon Hugh Grant as PM, Colin Firth and Keira Knightley (‘I look quite pretty’) in this absolute English/Christmas staple. This film will pull at your heartstrings, make you laugh and also impress with a pricey cast. This film follows many plots, including Professor Snape – Alan Rickman – buying a necklace for his not-wife and secretary. In my opinion, you can’t really go wrong with film, it holds everything you want in a film, while also being Christmassy, what more could you want?
