Emily in Paris through the eyes of a Parisian- Eugenie T.

Emily in Paris is a popular American series on Netflix. Since its release in 2020 for the first season, in 2021 for the second and in 2022 for the third one, the series had to face a lot of criticism.

The main character, Emily, is an American who moves to Paris for her job and who discovers the capital for the first time. The problem is that in the series Paris is presented with all the stereotypes that foreigners have about France. However, the most important thing when you watch Emily in Paris is not to believe all the things that you can see about the Parisians or French people in general but to explore the capital yourself and take the stereotypes presented with a pinch of salt. In fact, as opposed to what you can see in the series, not all French people wear a beret and a “mariniere” which is a t-shirt with stripes. However, yes in Paris we have a lot of bakeries and if you walk in the streets on a Sunday morning, you can see a lot of people queuing for their fresh croissant or pain au chocolat.

The French fashion is also very famous and you can see a lot of very pretty women with elegant outfits, such as Camille or Sylvie who represents the perfect French business-woman. However, do not believe that all the Parisians wear these types of clothes every day, but you can see some pretty outfits, especially during the fashion week in Paris.

The 3rd season of Emily in Paris has just been released but already, there is a lot of new criticism: Paris is not without its faults and some people criticise the series for depicting Paris as the perfect city. The picture of a beautiful Paris is not totally true because Paris is affected by a real environmental problem and if you come to Paris and you not just stay in the city centre, you can see all these problems. If you use public transport in Paris, such as the metro or the RER, in the morning around 8:00 a.m. you will see the real Paris: crowded trains with busy commuters who are often in a bad mood. However, I do not say that Paris is bad or dirty and that all Parisians are bitter and anti-social but only that you have to be careful about all the things that you can see in the series as they do not show the real Paris or the ordinary French citizens.
