Celebrity Traitors Returns: An Overview of Ep 1 – Katie T
SPOILER WARNING – This contains spoliers for Episode 1. If you haven’t watched it yet I would strongly advise you do before reading this article…
The wait is officially over. Last night, BBC One aired the extended 75-minute launch episode of The Celebrity Traitors, officially opening the doors of Ardross Castle for a second series of high-stakes deceit and gripping tension. Host Claudia Winkleman welcomed 21 famous faces to the Scottish Highlands to play for up to £100,000 for their chosen charities. But as always with this show, the real spectacle wasn’t just the castle location or the £100k prize pot – it was watching the immediate shift in dynamic once the Traitors were picked.
Last year, we saw an iconic series end with the renowned Alan Carr taking home the glory in an incredibly gripping finale. That episode itself attracted an incredible 11.1 million viewers, and this year is looking to be just as popular as the last.

The episode started in the chapel, where Claudia put the 21 celebrities on the spot by asking them to collectively decide who among them was the most trustworthy. The group agreed on Julie Hesmondhalgh, who was then handed two crucial Shields – choosing to keep one for her own protection against the first murder and gifting the second to Joe Lycett. In my opinion, that was very good play from her.
Finally came the moment we were all waiting for. The blindfolds went on at the Round Table, and Claudia made her rounds, selecting her initial duo: Richard and Maya! Richard E. Grant, renowned for his roles in Saltburn and numerous other Oscar-nominated films, has a signature blend of theatrical flair and eccentric charisma that makes him a natural fit for a Traitor, effortlessly masking a ruthless strategy behind theatrical charm. Meanwhile, Maya Jama, best known as the glamorous host of Love Island, a top TV presenter, and a former Radio 1 DJ, is an equally natural fit, using her magnetic charm and cool composure to easily disarm the room and deflect suspicion.
Next, the contestants headed out to a chilly Scottish loch for their first team mission, where two abandoned shipwrecks set the scene for the challenge. James Blunt (who used to be an army officer) and actor Ross Kemp immediately stepped up to command the group, directing everyone to haul heavy wooden crates from the water and scour the decks for hidden keys. Working in small teams, players like Joe Lycett and Maya Jama scrambled against a tight 90-second escape timer to unlock a final chest on board before a big explosion went off. Personally this was one of my favourite missions I have seen in a long time!
The episode ended on a cliffhanger. The Traitors had to choose 2 celebrities: one to eventually be recruited, and one to be murdered. Maya and Richard decided to choose James Acaster (a popular comedian and podcaster) and Amol Rajan (a news broadcaster), as they needed to pick people who would help clear Richard’s name after his massive blunder (accidental or purposeful? Truly I don’t know) earlier in the episode. They pleaded their cases… but was it enough.
We heard Claudia shut one coffin. Richard said their decision was a risk. We’ll find out who was murdered tonight at 8pm…
