Shchedryk : A carol that has lost its meaning
Music is a key component of Christmas, weaving traditions , culture and religion all together . Often at this time of year, carol services begin and familiar melodies fill the air. Countless carols and hymns are sung near the end of the year, often liked to the story of Jesus Christ’s birth, spiritual or moral messages and the joyfulness of celebration. But what if one of the songs we sing so often, is not about Christmas at all ?
“Carol of the bells “ is a very well-known piece of music, heard at services or concert halls during the festive period. Although it is frequently sung in English, this ancient folk song actually originates from Ukraine. The original lyrics celebrated the coming of spring and wellbeing, making it a tune that should be heard during or just before New Years rather than Christmas. In 1936, the English adaptation was created and new Christmas related lyrics were added to the original melody. Media such as films, commercials and tv programmes have made the music transform, into what we know now :” Carol of the Bells “ – a song strongly associated with Christmas.
In Ukrainian “Shchedryk” means a bountiful evening symbolising prosperity and wellbeing. An intricate storyline is crafted by the lyrics of a swallow flying into a household predicting wellbeing , happiness and unity into a family. Over time however, the modern adaptation has shifted this intended meaning, taking away from its traditional roots and diminishing its connection to Ukrainian culture .This change reflects the loss of knowledge and recognition of the country’s heritage globally . Today, we should be working towards raising awareness around Ukraine in these times of conflict and hardship , using songs like Shchedryk to support those in need.
Singing this wonderful piece of music in Ukrainian can show our support, while spreading awareness because music is not just sound but also a connection between cultures, stories and people. So, this year why not try singing a carol in its original language? By honouring its roots we are celebrating diversity and ensure traditions continue for later generations to appreciate , just as we do today .
