Violence against Women – Polina G.

The UN has designated the 25th of November as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. Violence against women is one of the most widespread and damaging problems in our society. It comes in many forms such as sexual, physical, psychological and economical. It happens when someone is abusing power. It is never because women had done something wrong.

It mostly happens because of uneven power in relationship or families. Sadly it is mostly based on patriarchy, so men abuse women. In some cultures this is sadly  still acceptable so men feel like they have an excuse. It is never related to religious views as  religions won’t accept violence. However, some might use religion as an excuse for their actions. Domestical abuse is a horrible part of it because every 10 minutes one girl dies. The worst part of it is that women  tend not to talk about it and do not ask for help. Maybe it is connected to them not having been heard by a long time. So, men are thinking that there will be no consequences for them. Psychological manipulations from the men’s side are forcing women to be quiet. Lastly, economical violence means women are  not allowed to work or study.

Even though there are a lot of ways around the world of finding help, some countries still accept it, such as Afghanistan which is widely known. It damages everything: future opportunities, safety in a country as well as children growing up traumatised, and families being ruined.

More effective laws which punish violent men, a safe society, education from a young age about respect and equality are all ways of protecting and making women’s lives safer. We all need to remember that all people are equal; no one is better or worse.
