Amnesty International – Vika O.

What is Amnesty international?

Amnesty international is a global organisation that fights for human rights all around the world and has created a movement in the world with more than 10 million people, who want to create a bright future where human rights are enjoyed and respected by everyone. They are independent from any political ideology, economic interest, or religion. They stand with victims of human rights violations whoever they are, wherever they are.

Who is in it/how can you get involved?

Amnesty international is open to anyone who wants to help to fight for human rights. They have a website where they upload different petitions that you can sign and help people by getting the votes. You can also join different meetings and protests. You can also become their member which usually involves a small fee, and you then have voting rights on Amnesty’s priorities at local and national level. Another way to be included is to volunteer locally or do public actions, or you can support them financially by donations or fundraising. There are many other ways that you can get involved in helping them with their main aim. Your actions make a difference.

How do they raise their finance?

They raise their finance by:

  • Individual donations (Amnesty is primarily funded by millions of small contributions from individual supporters worldwide)
  • Membership fees (people who formally join Amnesty pay a yearly fee)
  • Philanthropic foundations and trusts (Certain projects receive grants from private foundations)
  • Corporate donations (Amnesty sometimes accepts funds from businesses, they reject money from industries linked to human rights’ abuses)
  • Government funding (For their core human rights research and advocacy, they do not accept government funds to avoid conflicts of interest. In some countries, they may accept government or EU grants for human rights’ education projects, not for investigative or advocacy work.)
  • In 2023 they had total global income approximately 370 million euros
  • They keep their independence, 91% of their global income is “unrestricted” meaning they can spend it as they think they need to.

Their mission and values:

They have a vision of the world where everyone enjoys human rights in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and other international human rights’ mechanisms. To achieve this vision, their mission is to do research and act, focus on preventing and ending grave abuses of these rights.

Their core values are based on their commitment to the global community of human rights defenders, that make up their membership:

  • International solidarity
  • Effective action for the individual victim
  • Global coverage
  • Universality and indivisibility of human rights
  • Impartiality and independence
  • Democracy and human rights

And did you know that there is an after school «Amnesty international» club here at school, which is led by Mrs Nicholls? You can get involved, share your opinion, and become more aware of what is happening around the world. You will be able to take action and help us to fight for human rights. Everyone is welcome to join!
