Life Before RHS – Jess E
A new upcoming weekly feature is coming to the RHS Bubble, a feature which provides insights, secrets and more into the lives of staff before their time at RHS.
Many of us know the staff at RHS as our house masters, house mistresses, headmaster, second master, teacher, maybe french or chemistry, and much more. However, do we know them as the man who’s’ trained for marathons along the Thames. Well this new feature ‘Life Before RHS’ will tell you just that and make you see your teacher and the RHS staff in a different light.
Mr Latif – Headmaster
Favourite Memory Before RHS?
‘My favourite pre-RHS memory is marathon training at dawn along the Thames, looping past the London Eye and Tate Modern before the city woke up.’
Here’s an aesthetic picture taken on one of Mr Latif’s early morning runs.

Did You Always Want to Work in Education?
‘Before RHS, I headed DLD College London beside Westminster Bridge, having previously led Sexey’s School and served as Deputy Head (Academic) at Bedford School. I didn’t always plan on education; I toyed with a role in the City and law having read Chemistry at King’s College, London, but the alchemy of ideas and young people won me over.’
Something Not Many People Know About Me…
’My best cricket figures are 4 wickets for 4 runs in a single over, which was achieved in a staff cricket match at ‘Whitgift’. I love playing cricket and ballroom dancing in equal measure, and I am still in touch with the same group of friends from both primary and secondary school.
Fun Fact:
‘I once competed in a ‘Strictly Heads’ ballroom dancing charity event and came 4th out of 10 couples – tails, bow tie, sequins and all!’
A final picture of London, taken by Mr Latif, in all its glory.

That’s it for this week on ‘Life Before RHS’ if you want to know more secret insights into the life of your teachers before they became a part of RHS, come back next week for an insight into another member of staff!
