Dish(es) of the week!! *you can pick for us*
Lunch is the highlight of the day during school. The lesson before lunch you sit there counting down the minutes until the bell goes. You sit there wondering what is on the menu. You hope for specific meals to be made. Perhaps nachos, cottage pie, lasagne, fish and chips. Having a meal that you love at school makes the day even better. What is it about having good school food that makes us content? Gen and I will be reviewing our favourite meals that remind us of home and finding out what we classify to be a meal that makes us content below.
Having been to numerous schools, I can safely say I have tried some very unappealing food. Out of all the school RHS ranks in the top 2. It may even be first place. The food is outstanding compared to others. Fresh salads, plenty of meal options, deliciously sweet desserts, smart water dispensers, the list goes on. What’s even better is that the menu is filled with classic dishes that remind us of home.

The lasagne here at RHS is cooked almost perfectly. Unlike other schools, the pasta is fully cooked, the Bolognese isn’t ridiculously salty, the top isn’t crispy and hard to the point you can’t cut it, the béchamel sauce has a strong and delicious flavour. The bar for good school food is quite low but RHS clears it easily. Lasagne is a comfort food; It fills you up and keeps you warm, especially in winter. A school making the food this good allows students to eat their comfort foods without it being spoilt. Although the RHS food won’t top your home cooked meals it sure comes close.
On a different note, although I chose to board here, there do come days when I need a boost to keep me going through the long days. And that boost has got to be… the cottage pie. Honestly, I think it is such an underrated meal !! The crispy cheese on top of the potato adds such a pleasant factor to this belly warming dish. Moreover, the beef is always rich and delicious, perfectly served with the peas and carrots within. After a windy day on the pitches, or a tough first 5 periods, the cottage pie is just what we all need. A well-deserved move from supper to lunch time, as it means more people can enjoy its mouth-watering deliciousness, although, some boarders may complain about the lack of opportunity to get seconds, however, I can’t actually remember the last time there were any crowds rushing up for more… Anyway, cottage pie is almost nostalgic for me personally, reminding me of rainy days at home, and so to be able to eat it at school too, brings a nice piece of home up to Suffolk. Sooo… next time you see cottage pie on the menu, make sure to give it a try!

To conclude, Liya and I have decided to place Lasagne and Cottage Pie equal in ranking (although I may disagree on the proportions of tomatoes in lasagne, there is definitely such a thing as too many tomatoes!) Both provide an enjoyable sense of homeliness; whilst also fuelling us for the rest of the day and not having to eat extra tuck- on that note custard creams are mostly definitely not a substitute for not having enough to eat at lunch- just try a new meal, it’s worth it !! Next time, Liya and I will find another theme within our lunches to review, and we will happily take any suggestions. However, please leave out any tomato heavy dishes for me, or there will for sure be one low ranked dish!
