The Met Gala: Best Dressed – Honor B

The Met Gala: Best Dressed – Honor B

Every year, on the first Monday of May, a mixture of some of the most famous faces in Hollywood, a collection of Nepo babies, and celebrities whose face you recognise but can never name, step out onto the carpeted entrance of the metropolitan museum of art. Creating one of the most talked about fashion events of the year, and, for people like myself, the perfect opportunity to scrutinise every look on display, while watching from instagram in bed. Then most importantly, a Bubble article that sums up the best looks of the night.

I must start by stating that fashion is certainly subjective, and these are just my personal favourites from the night. As well as this, a quick summary of the theme: Superfine – Tailoring Black Style. The theme is based around the costume institute’s current exhibition which focuses on the fashion of Black Dandyism, which was a style most popular in the early 1900’s, reflecting a defiance to the wear of traditional aristocracy. The Met wanted highlight the role this style has had in shaping fashion, and aspects of dandyism that still persist in clothing today. Although, the theme is inspired by men’s-wear, we can expect to see the focus of the pieces to revolve around; finely tailored pieces, extravagant accessories and bold colours.

1.

Laura Harrier in Gap

Starting with my favourite look of the night, one that I was shocked to see was created by Gap? I was unaware that Gap had become so upmarket, but I absolutely love this suit. Specifically how it manages to combine a floaty fabric with a really well tailored corset-style waistcoat, that alludes to theme. The silhouette is very elegant, and most importantly it stood out from the crowd.

2.

Damson Idris in Tommy Hilfiger

My favourite thing about this look was the way that it transformed, beginning as a racing suit and then revealing a very tailored red suit underneath. This is an ode to Idris’ latest film ‘F1’, yet also manages to encapsulate the theme entirely. The helmet is embellished with over 20,000 Swarovski crystals, which makes such a perfect accessory to the suit. I think the paparazzi’s reactions in the back sum up how cool this look was.

3.

Suki Waterhouse in Michael Kors

Although I would not claim that this dress is absolutely groundbreaking, I do think it does simplicity very well. There were lots of attempts at trying to create simple dresses, and quite a large amount of them missed the mark. The emphasis on tailoring is very clear, with the lapels on the dress being inspired by a tuxedo and train on the back also an allusion to tailoring. This is a good example of how personal style can be incorporated without completely disregarding the theme.

4.

ASAP Rocky in AWGE

ASAP Rocky was one of the co-hosts of this year’s Met Gala and I feel his outfit definitely represented this. The look was created by his own creative agency, and was inspired by modern takes on dandyism – this can be seen in the fabric used for the jacket, being Parka. But the aspect of tailoring is still definitely prevalent in this look. The jewellery is also definitely stand-out in this look, circling back to the idea of extravagant accessories that lies within the theme.
