How can Compass prepare us for real life? – Ava O.
A wise person once told me that “life is what’s happening when you are busy making other plans”. As a child in primary school, I always wondered what that meant; In life, you will have many opportunities to make many things happen, but as you age you come to realize that people don’t live forever. There is no time like the present to do things your heart desires and grab the opportunities that come your way. People say the world is your oyster, so, in reality, the world is anything you wish and want it to be, as it is yours to explore.
Life is something special that only happens once for us all. Life can also be seen as a maze; each right decision taken is a new path to achieving success, but equally, any that doesn’t end in success should be seen as a learning experience. In addition to this, people tend to plan what real-life situations will be like; when really, most things do not prepare us for what life throws at us, but having plans can help to pre-warn us. For example, Compass, which is wide-ranging, deals with the good things and the difficulties of our planet Earth; from technology to anti-bullying and it is learning and participating in this subject that helps to prepare us for real-life situations.
Firstly, Compass teaches us about all fields of life; bullying, racism, technology, democracy and more so that we are aware of things when we are older so that we can apply them to our lives. For example, voting or having the freedom to write to an MP. Most of us in our early years of secondary school would not have thought about this, but now we are prepared for the responsibility of voting when we reach the age of eighteen.
Also, Compass is a very enlightening subject as you can learn about things in life that people have heard of but don’t quite understand. For example, racism and how it came to be and the effects of this in history. The lesson is that we should learn from this and try not to make the same mistakes as the human race going forward. We should always think for ourselves and not just follow the crowd. We need to make our own path in life, be accountable for our choices and always look to seize the opportunities given to us. At RHS it is not just in compass but the opportunities we have in general. Take hold of the opportunities, some you will like, others maybe not, but you won’t know until you try.
So, Compass prepares us well for life because half of the things I need to know for my older years are included in this subject, including the simplest of things like learning about happiness. Compass reinforces the values of RHS, taking opportunities, trying new things and being accountable and this will make the journey of life fulfilled.
