Burns Night Predictions -Lauren S
Saturday night (18 Jan) will be Year 13’s first and only Burns night celebrations at RHS. The event traditionally is a celebration and a tribute to Scotland’s national poet, Robert Burns, and, as such, is usually celebrated on the 25th January, what would be his birthday. The poet was born in 1759 and during his lifetime he wrote over 550 poems and songs, many of which are still enjoyed today. Most of you will know ‘Auld Lang Syne’, which we sing on New Year’s Eve, but he has written many more, including ‘Address to a Haggis’. Burns Night celebrations importantly include the Burns Supper which, of course, contains the traditional haggis. As well as this, much of Burn’s poetry is read aloud, there are performances on the bagpipes and, as I believe we are doing on Saturday, Ceilidh dancing (if you are interested, some videos on YouTube are well worth a watch!).
As I’m sure you can imagine, conversation amongst Nelson – particularly the girl’s side – has been focused on what we are going to wear. As I was discussing with Molly N and Tilly J before the Bubble meeting on Monday, as well as the already agonising task of choosing a dress (these things take weeks in the planning – we were informed of the date of Burns long before Christmas so that we could get cracking on choosing one!) we also have to take into account the practicalities – anything we wear needs to be something we can dance in! On this basis, heels have been written off – as mentioned by someone in Nelson the other day, it’s going to be a rather odd combination – full glam and then…crocs?
The evening will undoubtedly be enjoyable and I will report back next week! Until then…
