Claws for Concern? – Charlie L & Sam B
As many of you might know, recently, St V was put in hot water after a crab related incident went sideways. Much to the shock of the duty staff. Although it came across as amusing for the rest of the school, it has raised some ethical concerns in regard to keeping pets at RHS.
Why are pets actually banned in school? Pets offer an escape from the pressures of school life and ensure that we, as students, are less affected by the difficulties of joining a new school or coming back to a changed environment. Bringing a dog to period 1 on Monday, or having a goldfish in your room honestly doesn’t sound that bad.
On a serious note; pets can be a vehicle for disease and bacteria, and we can’t forget the problem of allergies that pets also pose. If mayonnaise has been banned, then pets definitely won’t be considered any time soon. Even if pets were to be considered, there are an array of different concerns which would arise:
- Animal welfare
- Wild animals (especially those that might pinch)
- FEAR.
Fear is a big reason why pets should not be allowed – ferrets, snakes and rats/mice are a big no. Plus anything with more than 6 legs, bees & wasps, and we can’t leave out any reptiles. These aren’t just animals that we have a fear of, but are animals that are proven to be dangerous around humans, and for clarification, that includes crabs.
Hopefully, the school can navigate around the negatives, and find a way to allow pets in school in a way thats safe and without any claws for concern.
