How to cope with sadness – Toby Sh.

Happiness, anger and sadness are three of the main human feelings. Sadness is the main reason for clinical depression. Happiness always ends, followed by sadness. Sometimes it makes our heart ache – so much so that it is really uncomfortable.

It is hard to walk away from sadness. I never say “Just ignore it!” to the one who is sad. In my opinion, if you try and ignore sadness, we are not complete. Sadness is one of the three basic feelings, which makes you complete. Moreover, forgetting is hard, and pointless. The best way to face sadness is by accepting it to be a part of you.

But, how to accept it? The answer is much easier than to ignore it and to try and forget it. We should express our emotions: think of babies, crying always works. I don’t agree with the saying ‘Men don’t cry’, since we were all born crying. And after crying, we often feel better.

Sadness causes us to think negatively. Forgetting means sadness will keep you in a low mood. Just let sadness be wiped out by your tears. You aren’t able to escape sadness if you lock it away in your heart.

Apart from crying, the other way to face sadness is by chatting to friends. There is a saying in my language that ‘Friends are those who stand by you’. Share those negative thoughts with friends, and you will feel better.

I know we all like to have a quiet moment when we are sad, but once you had a chat with friends or family, you know you aren’t alone. Being open about your feelings may help you more than hiding them.

So don’t be alone. Chat with friends, teachers or someone you know. Remember that you are not alone at RHS.

So now you know how to face sadness. Remember not to ignore it but cry, not to hide it but share. Sadness is a kind of poison: it ruins your day. Share it with friends, and sadness will soon disappear.
