‘Don’t settle’-Thought of the week – Dimas Valls-Quir
Good morning,
Most of you have probably read on the news about the Kenyan marathon runner, EliudKipchoge, who this Saturday became the first person in history to complete a marathon in under 2 hours. The marathon community described his accomplishment as ‘super human’ and experts have referred to him as the greatest endurance sportsman of all time.
Not being a runner myself, I still view such an achievement with great admiration, and I think we can all learn something from this unprecedented feat. Reading about this yesterday made me wonder what sort of mindset this man must have and question whether there is a limit to human achievement. Whilst it is true that records in most sports continue to be broken and the world is continuously seeing more and more advances, could everyone run a marathon? And, from a student’s perspective, caneveryone attain top marks in exams?
Arguably, I believe that yes is the answer to both of these question. People have different capabilities and strengths and weaknesses, but I believe that ambition and, most importantly, determination can overcome these. Some people might need torevise more than others to obtain the same grade, and some people may require more preparation than others to run a marathon. But ultimately, I think it can all potentiallybe achieved with the right mindset. You just need to really want something and pursue it, set big goals and consistently work towards them.
It is so common to choose the easy option in life and simply take what you are givenand call it ‘good enough’, but real achievers like Kipchoge never get complacent and always have extraordinary goals and aspirations, even if they fail to fulfil them. My message to you this morning therefore is: aim higher, want more and never settle. Finally, I’m going to leave you with Kipchoge’s words upon completing the historical marathon: ‘I’m showing the world that no human is limited’.
