Year 7 poetry: I give you my heart – Emily-Jane King
I give you my heart
(Based on the poem ‘Valentine’ by Carol Ann Duffy)
Not a paper cut-out or a beating organ.
I give you an egg.
It is a precious gem with a plain appearance.
It is like a seed
From which life begins.
Outwardly,
Its shell protects
Like a body guard.
It appears hard
But will fall apart when ready.
I am trying to be honest.
Not a chocolate egg or a meaningless token.
I give you an egg.
Its runny heart
Can soften the hardest soldier
As you do to me,
The more time we spend together.
Take it.
It requires attention,
If not to go off.
Rotten.
Its bright centre will stick in your mind,
Stick in your heart.
