Orange Today, Pink Tomorrow: The iPhone 17 Colour Confusion – Mia P

After seeing someone on TikTok complain that their iPhone 17 had miraculously changed from orange to pink I knew I had to look into this further. Was it a one-off incident? Does this happen to every orange iPhone? Why is this happening? What is Apple doing to fix this? So, now I’m here to report back on the Bubble so that you do not have to do any research yourself, it is all right here in front of you. So, let’s talk about one of the internet’s strangest tech mysteries.

The Reports

Many users have taken to social media to report that their orange iPhone 17 looks noticeably pink under certain conditions. Photos shared across many platforms show side-by-side comparisons where the device appears orange in one image and pink in another, leading to speculation about potential manufacturing issues or even a hidden flaw in the device.

Possible explanations

There are a few reasons behind this potential colour shift that have been given by Apple, but interestingly none of them suggest your phone is actually ‘changing colour’.

  1. Lighting Conditions – different lighting can dramatically affect how we perceive colour. Warm indoor lighting CAN make orange tones look more pink however personally I think this colour change is a bit more than a lighting affect.
  2. Camera difference – the way colours can appear depend on the screen that you’re viewing them on but also the device the photos are taken on. This isn’t incorrect but people must’ve noticed the difference with their own eyes before taking to social media so unless they’re all robots…
  3. Optical illusions – is this a similar phenomenon to the viral blue and black or white and gold dress debate? I’m not convinced.
  4. UV lighting or sun defects – Apple have heavily been suggesting that the colour change is due to people not using the correct phone cases on their phones and them experiencing sun damage from UV rays – now this is a possibility but that sounds very cheap for Apple?

Is it a real problem and what are Apple doing to help?

So far, Apple has not released an official public statement over this issue and most experts believe the issue is down to lighting rather than the phone itself. Clearly, at this point Apple are not openly concerned about this as there are reports from those who have contacted Apple over the issue, that this is being treated as a “cosmetic issue” and indirect prevention advice is being given but Apple are not offering any replacements even with phones that are within warranty at this moment.

Why does it matter?

While to a lot of people not experiencing the issues for themselves, this seems an almost “cool” feature of the phone however the frustration lies with those who spent so much money on an orange iPhone and now have a pink iPhone instead. On top of this, it shows how quickly small details are able to go viral and how this can affect the branding of a company. Widespread discussion has been sparked simply because of how easily images can be shared and compared online, but equally the lack of support for their customers that Apple has given has equally spread.

So, while some explanations point to lighting or perception, the consistency of user reports suggest this may be more than just a lighting issue. If this is a genuine issue, it puts pressure on Apple to respond more clearly. Customers at Apple expect premium products to maintain their appearance overtime and any unexpected change – cosmetic or not – can damage trust in the brand.

Until Apple provides a definitive explanation, the ‘pink iPhone’ debate remains unsolved. But for many users, the evidence is becoming harder to ignore this may not just be how we see colour, but about how well these devises are made.
