Borough Market- what’s not to like?? Genevieve M
Borough Market is London’s oldest and most popular food markets, with over 4.5mn people visiting annually!! I went with 2 friends over half term and the idea of 4.5 million people definitely made sense…
There was definitely lots to like (all the food) and possibly a whole lot to not like.
To start off with, the food was amazing- I mean you don’t come to a food market expecting a load of rubbish but still! The varieties of options were amazing ranging from Turkish to Japanese to British. To begin with, Anna, Hebe and I had the Black Pig’s viral pork sandwich (shown below) and it was SOOOO good. Like so so good. The pork crackling in it was cooked genuinely to beyond perfection, the apple-slaw was nice and juicy, the pork was so yummy and even the bread was amazing. Totally recommend!! even if it may have been slightlyyyy above £10… anyway we were there to have food not find bargains.

We also had soft beef tacos, which were super yummy and also super easy to get everywhere (thank goodness for all our pre packed napkins), and £5 gyozas, which actually did feel like a bargain given that everything else was far above that. As a side note, spare disposable cutlery might also be needed to eat these as we got given those fish and chip fork prong things (???) which were very good at keeping the gyozas in the box and not in our stomachs… But of course what’s not to like?!
Making our way through what seemed like all 4.5mn people at once, we scouted out some sweet treats. Starting off strong, we had the viral Humble Crumble, which was a 10/10. Firstly, who knew frozen custard was a thing? It was basically a fancy Mr Whippy and very very yummy. Secondly, £8 for a small pot of crumble?! Definitely a one off- unless I win the lottery any time soon (let’s hope). After the crumble, we had a creamy pistachio bun, in which the flavours balanced deliciously. To end our visit, we had a roasted peanut and salted caramel brownie, and although on the small side for me (probably could have had at least 10) it was super good!
Overall, our adventure to find good food and a lot of food, was successful- however, we did also go home and have another whole meal (ranging from stir fry to bangers and mash to fish and chips) so maybe we should have gone for more? Though I don’t think our bank accounts could have dealt with that!
So, although it was a fair trek up to London by train for all of us, the prices were slightly- massively- on the crazy side, and there seemed to be a billion people all in the market all at once… what’s not to like with the abundance of yummy food??
