Battle of the Christmas Foods- Gen & Liya
Christmas is the most festive holiday of the year; it’s the time of year when families come together to celebrate. It’s the time of year when your auntie will wear an elasticated pair of trousers for when she eats Christmas lunch – hoping to eat at as much food as possible. It’s the time of year when the little children run around from a sugar rush. Most importantly of all it’s the time of year when the discussion on what to serve at the table is the hottest topic of conversation. From sweet treats like classic mince pies to savoury pickings like pigs and blankets, the variety of food choices makes it hard to decide what to put on the table, which results in everything being made! Here are three of our favourite sweet treats.
Anyway, knowing you’re all here for the sweet section, let’s begin!
Firstly, I thought I’d start with the most traditional, classy, delicious sweet treat: mince pies. Mince pies are everywhere at Christmas, from Waitrose to Matron’s desk- and for a good reason. The perfect mix of spice and sweetness, they’re go to Christmas party treat. I genuinely couldn’t count the number I’ve had each Christmas on any number of hands (if you ignore the dark era in my life when I refused to touch a ‘meat’ pie with raisins as I foolishly thought they were…) Moving on to brighter thoughts. Easily accessible, easily bakeable, easily served- hopefully this power of 3 does them justice. Its crumbly pastry encases a blend of dried fruits, citrus, nutmeg, ginger and more, filling each bite with the yummiest taste. Sounds like a real winner to me- especially when slightly warmed!

Secondly, holding up the ‘sweet’ fort are the one and only gingerbread houses. Fun to make and eat, gingerbread really is a Christmas staple. Drizzling on the seemingly least sticky icing out there, chucking a few chocolate buttons and jelly beans seems to be the route for many. On the other hand, gingerbread houses also provide a great excuse for the perfectionists and creatives around us to show us their skills- exquisite chimneys, windows from melted sweets, gardens of apple laces. However, one negative about this yummy biscuit is its ability to drive siblings apart over who’s house is the best… but then again, having to have a winner may actually help one sibling out greatly of course! An outstanding example of a gingerbread house has got to be our very own school one in the DH- it looks incredible.
Onto even more incredible things, last up is hot chocolate. Okay, whilst this may not be a ‘food’ itself, it is sweet and you can technically eat it, so I’m counting it. Hot chocolate is a pure Christmas staple. Rich, creamy, delicious; it is the best thing for a cosy night with a Christmas movie or for sipping as everyone opens their presents. Another brilliant thing about hot chocolate is that you can add sooo many toppings (don’t have this with savoury stuff do you??). Marshmallows, squirty cream, normal cream, sprinkles, chocolate buttons and more. It really adds to the fun!! Hot chocolate is just what you need after a long- actually, its just what you need any time of the day.
Now onto the (more boring) savoury items:

Of course, at Christmas we need the sweet delights, but we also need the warm savoury comfort foods that you find on your table at this time of year. What is Christmas without a Turkey, and some gravy, and potatoes, and Brussel sprouts, and turnips and…the list goes on! Whether you like all Christmas foods, (I personally hate Brussel sprouts) they are a staple of what Christmas is. Take pigs and blankets; you have the peppery sausage in the middle wrapped with the salty juicy bacon finished with a crisp on the corners – or if you prefer, crispy all the way round. Foods like this hold nostalgia and fill you with comfort when you eat them.
So, what do you have at Christmas? Does your family argue over what the best vegetable to have, or do you increase your blood pressure rapidly by eating as many sweet treats as possible?
