Protests in Nepal – Angela R

Just over a week ago , the news was filled with reports surrounding the recent conflicts in Nepal . Videos, posts and articles filled global networks sparking international curiosity and consequently confusion, so what’s really happened?

For some context , the government had enforced a social media ban early last week triggering the youth to protest in retaliation . However,  the new policy acted only as a disguise , as many deeper longstanding issues drove the agitated nation to oppose those in power. Some of the main issues include failure to solve countless corruption cases , elitism / nepotism within political households , youth unemployment and ignorance of the people’s suffering  . The people felt wronged , by their own government.

According to the general conception that Nepals government is not currently facing its prime , their reactions towards the mostly peaceful protests shocked many. Armed police men were sent out to shut down the people , using dangerous methods including tear gas , water cannons , rubber bullets , even live ammunition creating 2 days of violent protest . Following the 48 hours, there were more than 1,000 casualties and over 70 lives lost .

On the 8th of September the futile attempt to “ silence the people “ was drawn back and the social media ban was shortly lifted allowing the new to spread worldwide . Subsequently , the PM Oli and Home minister Lekahak stepped down, but this did not settle the furious nation as other minsters denied releasing open fire orders . The following actions taken by the Nepalese people contrasted those from earlier that week , due to their aggressive nature in light of the injustices that they faced , with parliament being set alight as the most significant. As the younger generations were so prominent in facing issues it has become clear that the future of Nepal is in strong hands and that the future is unwritten .

As a new female prime minister takes charge , evidently Nepal has begun to evolve. She is the first female PM and her cabinet has already faced many challenges , but the former Supreme Courts chief of justice has proved her resilience as they repeatedly try to bring those responsible for violence to justice. The protesters who ran the streets up until recently simmered down at this news , as method of showing their support , once again proving the reformation to come in Nepal.

The future of Nepal is still uncertain , but from recent events we can see a turn towards the right direction. Personally, I believe that the uprising of the younger generations will be the catalyst for long-lasting changes in Nepal , as the people are no longer scared to speak out . They have gained their voices back … and it seems that they won’t back down any time soon.
