Forgotten RHS: The RHS Disco – Imy L

You guessed it — RHS Forgotten is making a return! For those of you who spent your summer holidays in despair at the lack of new insights into the past of RHS, look no further. Luckily for you I have been snooping around the school and talking to some of our senior members of staff so that I can give you bubble readers what you want most – what RHS really used to be like…

For this edition of ‘RHS Forgotten’ it was time to have an insight into what it was the pupils got up to in their free time – specifically on the weekends. After having a look through some old Bubble articles, I discovered an old tradition that even I was yet to hear about: the RHS discos. A distant memory for some teachers across the school, the RHS Disco used to take the school by storm on a Saturday night.

Consisting of mainly boarders and starting at 7pm, the year 9s would swarm the Jellicoe room ready for the shenanigans of the night ahead! Said shenanigans consisted of dancing to tunes from the DJ and consuming an ungodly number of soft drinks, but supposedly felt comparable to a night out clubbing. As the night progressed the younger years would depart and in came the older years who were ready to get the real party started…of more dancing. Those who experienced these nights have described them as ‘bant’ and reminisce on them with a sigh and a smile, so clearly they created some nights to remember. I also discovered that some nights even had a theme to add a bit more pizazz to the evening – how intriguing.

So that’s a little look into the past of ‘night life’ at RHS – thoughts? Maybe the humble RHS disco needs to make a return…

Stayed tuned for next week which will be reviewing some of the old school sports events (and revealing the secret behind the ban of Monday night Nelson vs staff 5 a side – ooo drama!).
