Why I Write? (Call to Pens!)

When George Orwell titled his famous essay “Why I Write”, he was reflecting on what drives people to put their thoughts into words. That same question is at the heart of our Scholar Slot, which first appeared in The Bubble last year. This year, we continue the tradition: a space for Academic Scholars to write not for grades or assessments, but for the sheer joy of exploring and sharing ideas.

Why does this matter? At its core, the act of writing reflects our three values: curiosity, independence, and resilience. Curiosity pushes us to ask questions and look beyond the syllabus. Independence allows us to develop and express our own voice, not just repeat what has been taught. And resilience reminds us that writing is not always easy. It takes persistence to refine ideas and commit them to paper, but the results are worth it.

Every week, Scholars have the opportunity to showcase passions that may otherwise stay hidden. It might be a scientific phenomenon that fascinates them, a moment in history that still raises questions, a piece of literature that changed their perspective, or a surprising link between disciplines. Whatever the topic, their writing gives others a chance to share enthusiasm.

This is more than just filling space in a newspaper, it is about keeping a conversation alive. Each article carries the potential to inspire, challenge, and spark new lines of thought in its readers. And so, this is a Call to Pens! for all Academic Scholars: carry on the tradition, pick up where last year left off, and let your words reflect your curiosity, independence, and resilience.

The Bubble offers a platform for ideas. There are no strict rules about what you write or how you write it, only the chance to share your curiosity and creativity. Whether you want to explain, reflect, or simply express what fascinates you, this is your opportunity.

So, why do I write? Because writing is a way of making thought visible. And why should you write? Because your ideas and questions deserve to be heard. The Bubble is waiting… now it’s over to you.
