Forgotten RHS: Food- Molly N

Forgotten RHS: Food- Molly N

Having spent almost 7 (enjoyable but long) years at RHS, and being in my final year, I often find myself looking back on ‘the good old days’. Back when your only concern was that your bag weighs more than you, and when your prep was a wordsearch or to build a volcano. So to distract me from the impending doom of exams, I have been inspired (with the help from fellow Bubble editors, Phoebe G and Bella P) to start the series, ‘Forgotten RHS’, where I will be using comments from pupils and staff to reminisce on RHS’s past. This debut will be something that concerns everyone and is probably the highlight of quite a few yr7s’ days … food.

I want to preface this by saying that this is not a criticism of the meals or kitchen staff- myself and those involved are simply reminiscing and appreciating meals we used to enjoy in previous years.

Without further ado… these are the results:

  • Yums Yums- I’m not sure when these stopped, but I’ve heard that it was moved to dinner for a while. For those of you that don’t know, during lunch on a Friday, the desert rotated between yums yums, donuts and cookies. “Who doesn’t love a good end of the week sweet treat, yums yums were my fav”
  • Tacos- I had completely forgotten about these. They were served during lunch and despite being difficult to eat, they were delicious. “I can’t remember much tbh, just that they were yum”
  • Chocolate mousse- an absolute classic lunchtime desert that was discontinued. “Pots of chocolate mousse used to be a daily thing at RHS until one day they just disappeared… lunch hasn’t been the same since”
  • Ribs on a Saturday- as a previous day pupil, I was not aware of this meal but from the sounds of it, I missed out! Whenever I asked the question of forgotten meals, borders jumped at the opportunity to exclaim their love for ribs. “It was Benji’s fav one”- not fact checked
  • (Bit of a long list:) Waffles, Pancakes, Chicken burgers, Curly Fries, Diced Potatoes- “it just tasted so good and was like omg its…”. I’m not exactly sure what they meant at the end there, but despite once again missing out on some boarder meals, I can vouch for the curly fries which I tried once (they were so good!)

These haven’t technically been ‘forgotten’ quite yet but seem to be on their way out:

  • Veggie Katsu- I’m pretty sure we had this last term during lunch as an alternative to the chicken, so the important question is, will it return? “I really liked the Quorn chicken that came with the katsu (it tasted scarily like chicken!). I think it actually tastes nicer than the chicken, and others think so too!”- very controversial but I’d have to agree
  • White bread rolls and breadsticks- these used to be daily and whenever I see them during lunch I just have to get them!
  • Fruit salad- I was reminded of this on Monday when somehow it reappeared for the first time in years (as far as I am aware). I had completely forgotten that this was one of my favourites, and yr7 me was eager to fill my bowl up to the brim with grapes and sliced pineapple. Having grown and matured, I would like to formally apologise for taking as many peach slices as I could find, leaving little to none for anyone who got there after me.

That rounds off the debut of ‘Forgotten RHS’. Stay tuned for next week’s edition…
