Rugby Recap – Tilly J

Last weekend saw a plethora of action take place at some of Europe’s most iconic stadiums in the third week of the 2024 Autumn Nations Series, where some intense and enthralling international rugby was played.

We saw Steve Borthwick’s England looking to get back to winning ways in their blockbuster clash with reigning World Champions South Africa at the Allianz Stadium, Twickenham, whilst Scotland took on Portugal at the Murrayfield Stadium.

As for Wales, they came face to face with Australia under the stewardship of their Head Coach Warren Gatland at the iconic Principality Stadium in the heart of the Welsh Capital of Cardiff on Sunday.

Ireland also took on Argentina at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin, whilst France and New Zealand went head to head in Paris at the famous Stade de France on Saturday evening. Italy and Georgia also went face to face, playing against each other at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris in Genoa, Italy on Saturday afternoon.

Here, we will be taking a look back at all the action from an intense and enthralling weekend of 2024 Autumn Nations Series action.

Scotland 59 – 21 Portugal ( Murrayfield Stadium, Edinburgh)

We begin with the game between Gregor Townsend’s Scotland and Simon Mannix’s Portugal, who went face to face in Edinburgh at the famous Scottish Gas Murrayfield Stadium on Saturday afternoon. In the end, it was an emphatic victory for Townsend’s team, who returned to winning ways in emphatic fashion by beating their Portuguese counterparts 59 – 21 in what was a comfortable and emphatic victory.

Across the afternoon’s action, the hosts managed to score several tries, thanks to Will Hurd, Stafford McDowall, Darcy Graham, Josh Bayliss, Jamie Bhatti, Arron Reed (2), and Jamie Dobie. Adam Hastings scored 5 penalties, whilst Tom Jordan was also able to score a penalty on that day.

As for Portugal, they scored tries through Luka Begic, Samuel Marques, and Raffaele Storti, and it was Marques who got all three of their conversions that day.

England 20 – 29 South Africa (Allianz Stadium, Twickenham)

The next game from the weekend that we will take a look back at is the contest that took place between Steve Borthwick’s England and reigning World Champions South Africa, led by Head Coach Rassie Erasmus on Saturday afternoon. The venue for this game was of course the Allianz Stadium, Twickenham, and in the end, it was to be a tight 20 – 29 win for the visiting Springboks side that day.

Ollie Sleightholme and Sam Underhill did both get tries for the home team, whilst Marcus Smith was on hand to not only score two conversions but also score 2 penalties to boot that afternoon

As for South Africa, their tries came from Chester Williams, Pieter-Steph du Toit, and Cheslin Kolbe (2), with Manie Libbok getting two conversions, whilst Handre Pollard got one. Pollard was also the sole penalty scorer for his team that day at the Allianz Stadium, Twickenham.

Ireland 22 – 19 Argentina (Aviva Stadium, Dublin)

Andy Farrell’s Ireland was another side who got back to winning ways after their defeat against New Zealand, thanks to a tight 22 – 19 win against their South American counterparts Argentina at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin on the evening of Friday 15th November 2024.

Jack Crowley, Mack Hansen, and Joe McCarthy were all scorers of tries for Ireland in the game, whilst Crowley also contributed two conversions as well as a drop goal. It was a tight and intense game with the hosts edging their opposition, who got a try through Juan Cruz Mallia, whilst Tomas Albornoz got a conversion as well as scoring a total of 4 penalties on that day.

  • Italy 20 – 17 Georgia (Stadio Luigi Ferraris, Genoa).
  • Wales 20 – 52 Australia (Principality Stadium, Cardiff).

Next Up:

England’s fourth and final game of the 2024 Autumn Nations Series will see them go toe to toe with Japan at the Allianz Stadium, Twickenham in what will be a 16:10 kick-off on the afternoon of Sunday 24th November 2024.

As for Scotland, they will be going face to face with Australia earlier on that Sunday (24th), with this game set to take place at 13:40 that afternoon at Murrayfield. Wales will face reigning World Champions South Africa at 17:40 at the Principality Stadium on Saturday 23rd November, with Ireland taking on Fiji at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin on that same day, but in an earlier 15:10 kick-off instead.

Ireland will also be facing Australia in the 2024 Autumn Nations Series, also at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin, on Saturday 30th November 2024, with the kick-off taking place on that afternoon at 15:10.
