An RHS Sea Shanty- Phoebe G:

An RHS Sea Shanty- Phoebe G:

Last Saturday marked the long-awaited Year 13 Trafalgar Night (more informally known as Traf Night) that commemorated the 219th anniversary of victory at the Battle of Trafalgar and celebrated the life of Admiral Lord Nelson. It was a lovely evening and one that paid great tribute to Nelson’s life and legacy. It included the Principal Guest Speaker, Commodore Rob Bellfield’s (CBE ADC) speech on his ‘Immortal Memory’, but also Sea Shanties, led by the Motley Crew, with many staples in our Divisions parades (e.g. Rule Britannia and Heart of Oak) being sung.

For many, this was a highlight. For what is, for the most part, a very ceremonial silver service dinner, the sea shanties brought the year together in a more informal way and were fantastically performed by the Motley Crew. Now, whilst all the sea shanties were brilliant, I couldn’t help but think that an RHS sea shanty wasn’t in the works. Whilst I cannot entirely take the credit for such a masterpiece, here is what I can offer; a ChatGPT X Phoebe RHS sea shanty called ‘Heart of Suffolk’:

There are a few revisions that I have made to suit RHS more!

“Heart of Suffolk”

(To the tune of Heart of Oak)

Verse 1:
Come gather ’round sailors, from Suffolk’s fair shore,
Where the Royal Hospital stands evermore,
With hearts full of courage, our spirits set free,
We’ll sail through the Stour, to conquer the sea.

Chorus:
Heart of Suffolk are we,
Sailors bold from the Stour,
We always are ready: steady, lads, steady!
We’ll sail and we’ll conquer from coast to the shore!

Verse 2:
With blue and white crests, our colours unfurled,
We chart our own courses, we take on the world,
The spirit of Nelson still echoes our call,
With compass and courage, we can navigate all.

Chorus:
Heart of Suffolk are we,
Sailors bold from the Stour,
We always are ready: steady, lads, steady!
We’ll sail and we’ll conquer from coast to the shore!

Verse 3:
From classrooms to oceans, our lessons we learn,
With a star to our bow, and a wind to return,
Through storm and through calm, we’ll sail ever strong,
For the pride of our Navy, we’ll journey along.

Chorus:
Heart of Suffolk are we,
Sailors bold from the Stour,
We always are ready: steady, lads, steady!
We’ll sail and we’ll conquer from coast to the shore!

Verse 4:
So raise up your voices, ye lads and ye maids,
For the Royal Hospital that never fades,
With duty and honour, we stand side by side,
The spirit of Suffolk will ever abide!

Chorus:
Heart of Suffolk are we,
Sailors bold from the Stour,
We always are ready: steady, lads, steady!
We’ll sail and we’ll conquer from coast to the shore!
