The importance of travelling – Lotti M.

Meeting new people, making experiences that last a lifetime and being exposed to the complete unknown, all of these can be part of travelling and that is why it is so important. We as people are formed by the experience and memories we have made, so why limit them? Travelling is a privilege and not a right unfortunately. It can be incredibly expensive, time consuming and sometimes even dangerous, therefore not everyone gets to do it. But those who do get the chance are often able to collect so much more than just souvenirs: they get to learn about different cultures, different languages, they acquire new skills, be it a new hobby, a new way to do something or social skills; they get to collect memories and experiences, that prepare them for future problems and widen their horizon. All in all, you could say travelling is so important because of what we learn.

As mentioned before this can also mean learning about ourselves: Many people are born and raised in the same country and will spend the rest of their life exactly there. However, our world has 195 countries and there are 7,117 languages currently being spoken, so why should we only be attached to one? Some people go travelling to a place, completely unknown to them, and find that there is home. Nothing is more precious than finding home.

Another reason why travelling is so important is because it is helps you to “recharge”. This means going somewhere away from the all the stress in school, at work, with family or friends, etc. and just leaving all of it behind for a bit and find new energy and focus on oneself for a few days or weeks. In no way does this mean running away from your problems, no, it rather means to find the energy and maybe new perspectives to solve them.

In German there is a word that perfectly describes what so many people feel when they think about travelling: “Fernweh” it is the opposite of homesickness, the longing for being (far) away, either a place you’ve been to or just any new place you want to see. One of my biggest goals in life is travelling as much as possible, to be brave enough to be exposed to the unknown and build happy memories because of it.
