Evil and omnipotent? – Toby Sh.
Thousands, millions of adversities will be encountered in life; natural or man-made disasters that kill and cause suffering. Life is bound to be filled with hardship and inequality. People question the Lord for delivering us so many sorrowful moments, moments in which we cry and suffer. Why when the Bible said Lord is omnipotent, loving and cares for his people will he let us suffer, cry and experience bad things?
Going back to the Bible, one of the most famous sufferings is mentioned in Job. Job was religious in a time when the other Jews were unfaithful. Job was the only one who was honest and true to his word in front of the Lord. Yet Satan claimed the faith of Job is only down to the success which the Lord had given to Job. So Satan takes away everything Job has, tempting Job to stop worshiping and start blaming. Nevertheless, in Job 1:21 he says: “Naked I came from my mother’s womb, naked I’ll return to the womb of the earth. God gives, God takes. God’s name be ever blessed.”
People doubt, blame and criticise the Lord in difficulties. Every time when they meet obstacles in life or losing someone. Yet was it Lord’s fault that we encounter obstacles?
Surely not. Most people think they own everything; barely anyone thanks the Lord for providing them with everything they have. For instance, people blame the Lord that the mortgage was too high and that they were not able to afford something. While barely anyone thanks the Lord for providing them with a house and the ability to work and paying their house. In 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 says: “Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” Nevertheless, not everyone can do this, no matter whether they believe or not. People struggle with life and when depressed think that there is no hope and blame Lord.
Lord is merciful, providing all what you need: your three meals a day, your ability to work, family members that care about you, a unique life experience. Allow me to ask, do you think you deserve your life? No one has paid anything for having their life and this is one of those gifts from God. And what could be more important than that?
When we look back at our past has there ever been a second in which we have had less than what we had when we were first called a living person? Surely, we may lose our happiness, our chances, or even our beloved ones, but none of those was not given by him. One day in our life, if we may just sit and think, what do we deserve? And what was provided as a gift?
