Golden Globes: Barbie’s Big Loss – Isabel T
The 2024 Golden Globes wrapped up a year of successful films as well as preluding to the upcoming and highly anticipated Oscars in the coming months: here’s a rundown of awards and losses.
One of the first losses started even before the ceremony started included ‘comedian’ Joy Koy’s opening speech, which was met with crickets and cringing faces. After completely undermining Greta Gerwig’s ‘Barbie’, stating that the one aspect he acknowledged from the powerful message of female objectification and toxic masculine culture, was that Barbie ‘is a film about a plastic doll with big boobies’. Yikes. After being met with bland faces after dropping numerous terrible one liners, he attempts to redeem himself, ‘I got this gig 10 days ago, you want a perfect monologue?’ Let’s hope next year Ricky Gervais will return once again to compensate for the lack of comedic flair.
Anyway, let’s move on to the awards. Oppenheimer dominated the field winning 5 awards including Best Film (drama), Best Director (well deserved by Christopher Nolan), Best Actor (drama) awarded to Cillian Murphy as he accepts with lipstick on his nose, Best Supporting Actor won by Robert Downey Jr, who jokes about its wealthy box office sum, ‘a sweeping story about an ethical dilemma of nuclear weapons grosses $1 billion?’ and Best Original Score (Ludwig Göransson). A huge win by Oppenheimer which is likely to be seen again in the Oscars.
However, it’s rival, Barbie, only swept up 2 awards: Cinematic Box Office, which is hardly a surprising award for its popularity, and Billie Eilish’s song ‘What Was I Made For?’ for Barbie won Best Original Song. Many fans were left disappointed with its achievement, knowing its immense affects of reviving cinema worldwide, discussing important issues within a patriarchal world and its overall popularity during release. However, I, and many others, are confident in its comeback for the Oscars, likely to sweep up even more awards.
TV show Succession also swept the floor with awards for television, winning Best TV Series for drama, competing against popular shows such as The Crown and The Last of Us. Sarah Snook won Best Actress in TV Series (drama), alongside Kieran Culkin for Best Actor in a TV Series (drama), and finally Matthew McFadyen for Best Supporting Actor in TV Series, where 2 other actors were also nominated from Succession.
Other honourable mentions include Beef, where both leading roles, Ali Wong and Steven Yeun won Best Actress and Actor for a limited series. The Bear also swept numerous awards for Best TV Series (comedy), Best Actor for TV Series (comedy) was won my Jeremy Allen White and Best Actress for TV Series (comedy) was awarded to Ayo Edebiri. The Golden Globes has allowed for more suspension for Oppenheimer and Barbie for the upcoming Oscars, as well as its (hopefully) comedic host Jimmy Kimmel. Maybe we’ll also be entertained by another slap? Or punch? Who knows?
