Lord of the Flies (exterminator) – Toby S

As the summer days get warmer, pupils usually can’t wait to have their summer holiday. However, there is something really annoying that reoccurs every summer: flies. Not only annoying and disgusting, flies can spread diseases and contaminate food. It is important to get rid off them in your house.

In order to get rid off the flies, firstly you need to know how they fot into your house. There are many ways for them, but their main way of entering your property is through small cracks that you were never aware off and open windows. To prevent flies, you may shut the window if you are not suffering from the summer heat or simply fill the cracks and holes in the wall.

Another factor that attracts flies into your house is dirt: uncovered trash bins and perished fruit are what is attracting them. To get rid of flies, we should close bins, clean the house and get rid of rotten fruit.

Whilst plants are one of their main food sources, some of the plants may keep the flies away from us, like basil, marigold and bay leaves. And some of those could even be added to your dishes too as herbs. A win-win situation!

To make a trap for them is a good idea too, especially when the ingredients can easily be found at home. By simply mixing vinegar and soap in a tall glass, covering it with a plastic wrap, securing it with a rubber band and poking holes into it, a trap is set. When the flies are attracted by the vinegar, they will fly through the holes. However, the soap in it will make them sink instead of a safe landing on the vinegar.

Or alternatively, we may use a tape and put some sugar on it, and place it somewhere the fly may go. When they are attracted to it, they will get stuck and starve to death. However, having tapes full of sugar and dead flies sticking to it is definitely not very decorative in anyone’s house. Therefore, the vinegar and soap trap is perhaps a better option.

Flies are annoying but with those methods mentioned above, you may soon be lord of the flies and can enjoy a quiet, buzz-free summer.
