Is this lockdown the worst of all? – Ellie Hewes
Is this lockdown the worst out of the three England have encountered so far? Many are saying yes, however I am taking a different view…
Firstly, let’s tackle the argument to do with the dark evenings and icy weather. Even though this combination leaves one feeling less determined to embrace the daily exercise we are allowed, I actually prefer this weather. Although I get cold ever so quickly, after working all day on a laptop, with a blanket on (as I am sure our heating does not work), the fresh air is welcoming, and it helps me to wake up. In the summer, rather than exercising, I was more prone to sunbathing and eating ice cream. This hot weather was also enjoyed by my neighbors, who have screaming five-year-olds. Funnily enough, they are not out in the garden as much now, which is great as I can finally get some peace and quiet.
Another reason why I am preferring this lockdown is due to the fact that there is more to do! At the end of year 12, there was not as much work (which I will not complain about). However, being in year 13, with mocks around the corner, there is more of an inclination to work. Therefore, I have found myself busier. I am certainly not saying that I prefer for there to be lots of work, however I am saying that having this work is keeping me busy, which is the way I have been coping.
Thirdly, I think the lockdown last year felt longer as the summer holidays followed it. This time, even though Boris keeps changing the date as to when schools go back, I just have this inkling that we will be back soon (something I didn’t have in the summer).
Lastly, I think this lockdown is easier due to the fact that it is not new to us (like the last one was). We have managed to adapt, and it has become the new norm to use Zoom rather than seeing one another physically. Despite the controversy, I think in terms of online lessons, it has been better to have cameras on, rather than just seeing these icons with initials in. Having the cameras on also makes you get ready and get out of bed on time.
Now, I know that I have taken a controversial stance, but I would be interested to see if anybody thinks the same as me or differs. If you do agree or disagree, write a response and email it to me so that I can post it on the Bubble next week!
