Vertical farming – Fred N

Vertical farming is a critical tool for feeding dense areas (e.g. cities) and doing so without the massive carbon footprint that comes with shipping food from far away farms. One company doing this is Plenty. One of their farms produces around 400 times more food per acre than the traditional farm. The plants are suspended in a nutrient rich solution to maximise efficiency.

Plenty uses AI (artificial intelligence) to monitor the water usage, light, and temperature of the environment the plants grow in. As it continues working, the AI learns how to grow the crops faster and at a better quality by comparing the effects of different variables.

As the environment and the plants are grown in is sterile environment meaning there is no need to use pesticides, making food that tastes better and healthier. Out-of-season plants can be grown close to home without adding the carbon footprint of transport.

They are backed with a $500 million investment from big names like Jeff Bezos, Eric Schmidt and SoftBank.
