Three ‘I’s; Iowa, Impeachment and Israel. – Amelia Potter

What is ‘going on’ in the U.S.

Just a month after the assassination of Qasem Soleimani in Iran, and already there is mountains more to report about American politics.

American politics, as I am not a politics student, appears somewhat complicated. But none the less, an interesting concept to try and understand. So, here’s an attempt…

President Trump is up for Impeachment, but the judge has decided to not allow witnesses or additional documents to stand in proposition or defense for the President. To quickly explain, as I myself was not fully aware, Trump’s attempts to pressure Ukraine to investigate Hunter Biden and Joe Biden, his potential 2020 general election rival, are at the centre of the President’s impeachment trial. Alongside obvious controversial topics, such like his anti-feminist remarks, the ‘wall’ and his slightly strange friendship with Putin much of the impeachment debate has surfaced from the Biden case, as to whether it was right to intervene, a simple case of moral judgment.

The republicans want to ensure that Trump’s ‘reign’, and dominance continues through acquitting his ‘crimes’. The democrats are desperate to end his power after a single term so that his support drops by the November election. Considering an official election will take place later this year, the trial has serious implications considering the fate of America.

Closing arguments in Donald Trump’s impeachment trial were made on Monday, preceding a vote on the articles of impeachment planned for Wednesday afternoon. So, as it comes to a close, some argue that ‘History will not be kind to Donald Trump’. Schiff, a manager of the trial, appears to have a personal dislike towards trump, believing he would continue to cheat in the November election. Calling him “A man without character or ethical compass”, displays a popular opinion of Americans.

The defence argue that it is essential to keep the president so that he is on the election ballot for 2020, arguing simply that, ‘The president has done nothing wrong’. As is stands, Trump has called the whole performance a ‘waste of time’, appearing confident that he will not stand to be the first impeached president in U.S. history.

Meanwhile. In Iowa, where Obama found his most fundamental support, caucuses are underway to determine a democratic leader to attempt election as president in November.

No doubt a further divide has been made between within the democrats through the trial, and there is possibility that a new president like Bernie Sanders, (a strong candidate in the Iowa caucus) may take the nation as far left as it has ever been, despite not always being part of the democratic constituency. An important time in U.S. politics, just like it has been here for Brexit; let’s hope they don’t take as long to decide their fate…

A slight delay in the decision has just arisen as the polls were done during Monday evening, yet during the count, technical issues occurred, and the result remains ‘inconsistent’, undeclared.

Perhaps by the time you read this, a decision will have been made concerning the democratic leader up for election in November 2020.

Meanwhile, trump has made no delay in his peace treaty for the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The story of this feud goes back to the times of Christ and issues surrounding religion such as Judaism heritage and Muslim influence. Essentially, most of Israel is currently occupied by Israelis, yet the ‘West-Bank’ and part of the southern west coast, remain occupied by Palestinians, they believe it to be their land, and it is divided to be so.The US president said his proposed deal would ensure the establishment of a two-state solution, promising Palestinians a state of their own with a new capital in Abu Dis, a suburb just outside Jerusalem. Trump also said Jerusalem would be the “undivided capital” of Israel. This is perhaps the main issue in the plan. The Palestinians want their part of Jerusalem to remain under their occupation, and this deal would deny that. Arguably, the deal can be seen to strongly benefit the majority, repressing the rights of the minority, the Palestinians.

Some Israelis, however, would argue that ‘Palestine’, does not exist. In support that Israel has a right to all the land. Palestine reject this claim and Trumps ‘peace’ deal, arguing that the title is simply significantly misleading. Palestinians see it us an illegal robbery of Jerusalem, as the capital would become ‘undividedly’, the capital of Israel. The Palestinians claim, Jerusalem is ‘not for sale’.

Other members in the area, argue that the divide between Palestine and Israel, should be completely rendered by the emergence of a new one-nation. Creating a new name for it if needed, and it would ensure a harmonious land, undivided. This, however, having researched the basic history of such a politically unstable area, is a fantasy.

Essentially, the Arab League believed, “It does not meet the minimum rights and aspirations of Palestinian people.” And in this way, encouraged a meeting that was held in Saudi Arabia, in attempts to officially reject the deal, which has in fact happened. Trump’s long-delayed plan for resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict was supposed to be a “win-win solution” for both sides. However, this assumption appears naive following the result of rejection. Better luck next time.

Essentially, the essence of this conflict is religion, as was the root of Soleimani’s assassination. It therefore appears fundamental that religion, if expressed, is done so respectfully, something that I believe needs to be universally emphasised and universally practices. Religion is the cause of conflict, that may be a blanket-phrase, but I don’t deny it. It is also, too, the cause of beautiful effects. Humanitarians may, however, argue that it is humanity that provokes such beauty, not a metaphysical entity. Even so, charities built on the foundations of faith, such like the London Missionary Charity, provide an oasis in a desert of conflict that needs growth.

All in all, this lengthy piece was supposed to be about American politics. I find it interesting how it is not surprising to me, that even such a concept provokes conversation about faith.

Back to the title of this article though… Keep up to date with the news, as it will no doubt unveil the questions you may want answered following this article. Additionally, I encourage you to further research concepts that I have alluded to, as I have only done so on a basic level, you may find further interesting knowledge to broaden your awareness.
