Thought For The Week – Freya Guckian

If you woke up this morning with more health than illness then you are luckier than the million who will not survive this week, and even luckier because you have access to essential healthcare. If you have food in the refrigerator, clothes on your back, a roof over your head and a place to sleep then you are richer than 75% of this world. If you have money in the bank, in your wallet, and spare change in a dish somewhere then you are among the top 8% of the world’s wealthy. If you can read, then you don’t belong to the 1 billion who cannot. So to put it simply we are very lucky to even be sitting in this room. Often, we take it for granted and forget how truly lucky we are to have access to even the simplest of things. Sometimes we need to take a step back and see what opportunities are given to us. So why do we not always try our hardest, from the simplest of things like handing in our prep on time, to revising thoroughly for important exams. Why? Nothing negative will come about from trying that bit harder, only a more rewarding result. If we all try a bit harder, we will all go just that bit further in life. I know this sounds cliché but make the most of the opportunities that are given here at RHS, because you will only regret it. We are given the opportunities to try something new, learn new skills, which so many other people around the world simply don’t have the chance to. We have so much freedom in what we want to do in the future while others struggle to even think about what the future brings. From my calculations, there is a 0.46% chance of us being in this room today, due to the fact we live in a first world country, have private education and have access to healthcare. So, make the most of what privileges we have because millions of other people would rather be in your position.
