AMNESTY reminder – Tuesday 1615-1830, H14

Here are extracts from two of the compelling stories read in Tuesday morning’s chapel. A reminder that caring about such things is a moral duty. You really should try to attend!

Marielle Franco dedicated her life for defending peoples lives and rights in Brazil. She stood up for the marginalised communities that live in favelas and across her country. On the 14th march 2018 Marielle was shot and killed for speaking out and defending what she believes in. The murderer was most likely someone from her own countries police force that should be protecting her not killing her.

In Kenya a group of people call the Sengwer Indignous people live in the Embobdut forest and have a deep spiritual bond with the land but since 2012 2,600 homes have been burnt down by the police; 4,600 people are now homeless. Janet Cheserek said: ‘I went to school, I left my home intact and when I came back, my home had been burned down.’ During this the police shot a man dead because he was apparently causing deforestation, even though the people have not damaged the Embobut forest.

Please come to our event next week to provide Marielle’s family with the closure and support they deserve and to get justice for this incredible woman.
