Sports Day Highlights – Bubble Team
Four of our editors have cast their minds back in order to share with you their favourite RHS Sports Day memories. Even though we’ll all be missing England’s second group stage game at the World Cup on Sports Day this year, where else would you rather be?!
ADAM WARREN: ‘Betrayal’
Sports day 2016 saw arguably the greatest show of unbiased marshalling, or the single biggest backstabbing by a house tutor. The U16 Boys 4 x 100m A Team relay was highly anticipated and the pinnacle of the Middle School’s boys Athletics. Hawke, in Lane 3 lead a fast start, pushing hard to in the race. Shouts and cheers accompanied their crossing of the line. Until the joy turned to horror at the red paddle being held up at Change over 1. Mr Chadwick disqualified the victorious Hawke team for an illegal change over, in our opinion a legal changeover. Chadwick argued by several paces Will Francis was outside the second blue line, thus earning us a disqualification, by a Will Francis sized pace (So not a great distance). Think of that what you will, our win stolen by our own House Resident.
LYDIA TORRINGTON: ‘A Near Miss’
It is widely known that Sports Day is the epitome of inter-house rivalry. It may also be known that Hood House have won the girls side for the last 20 odd years. So, you can imagine the sheer heartbreak and anguish that all Hoodites felt last year when it was announced that our title had been snatched by our rivals Raleigh. However, all hope was not lost as it was discovered later that Hood House had in fact been deprived of their win due to a minor bookkeeping error. Although the trophy may have been in Raleigh’s hands for a short few days, long shall rest in Hood’s trophy cupboard.
TOBY BRAYBROOKE: ‘The House you Love to Hate’
My favourite moment from a school sports day since I have been here has to be last years 4 x100m senior race that was won by Collingwood. The race was tight between Collingwood, Raleigh and St Vincent the whole way round, with strong legs from Sam Hindley and Emanuel. However what made this moment particularly special was on the last leg Toyo Ogunlesi came from behind to beat Raleigh right on the line to win the race, and ultimately to win sports day for Collingwood for a 10th consecutive year! The scenes on the finish line were crazy with Collingwood boys flooding the track to celebrate. [ed. – and that’s why Collingwoodians have no friends (apart from other Collingwoodians)].
HOLLY FOLKARD-SMITH: ‘Blank’
I genuinely have no stories from sports day, only that Libby was running and winning but she fell just before the finish line, but that’s literally it (clearly not during the race in the cover picture!).
